Centre for English Language Studies, Sunway University Centre for English Language Studies The Centre for English Language Studies has international staff who are highly qualified.

Sunways programmes are creative, engaging and highly interactive. The Intensive English Programme prepares students for Diploma and or Degree studies. The English for Specific Academic Purpose unit offers over 18 different English language courses for work and study purposes, each tailored to chosen areas of study.

Yesterday a panel discussion was organized in the framework of the FEL1384: Cross-cultural communication, one of the popular free elective courses at Sunway University. The panelists, Ms Kamilla Balla, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Hungary, Kuala Lumpur, Associate Professor Dr Nicholas Lee, Head of CELS, and Mr Md Aaraf Azad, a Master’s student at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Sunway University, shared about their experiences on living in a different culture, about culture shock, values and stereotypes. The discussion was facilitated by Prof Tamas Kiss from CELS and Prof Esther Smidt, a visiting professor from West Chester University of Pennsylvania.

CALL for papers for the October 2026 issue of Folio, the journal of M A T S D A - International Materials Development Association.
We welcome submissions on any aspect of the theory and practice of materials development for language learning, regardless of language. Articles can explore both theoretical and practical dimensions of materials use in language education, including L2 materials evaluation and design, coursebook writing and publishing, materials samples, research and reports on materials in use in international contexts, and book reviews. We encourage contributions from researchers, classroom practitioners, materials writers, and educators working across diverse educational settings worldwide. All submissions should demonstrate originality, clarity, and relevance to current issues in L2 materials development. Interdisciplinary perspectives and innovative approaches are also welcome.

The Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) Sunway University was delighted to welcome Professor Kaori from Kyoto Tachibana University (KTU) during her recent visit to campus. KTU has been a valued partner since before the COVID-19 pandemic, with their students continuing to join Sunway University for immersive 12-month study experiences under our Intensive English Programme (IEP).

During her visit, Professor Kaori shared exciting new opportunities for future KTU students and connected with the current cohort. It was especially meaningful to hear students reflect on their journey at Sunway—one student highlighted the IEP Graduation Ceremony as their most memorable experience.

As the current batch prepares to complete their programme this week and return to Japan on Saturday, the session provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their achievements and hear firsthand about their time at Sunway University. We are proud to have created a positive and enriching environment for our international students. Professor Kaori expressed her appreciation, noting that Sunway remains a highly popular destination among KTU students.

Thank you, Kyoto Tachibana University, for your continued trust and partnership. We look forward to welcoming many more students in the future!

Yesterday we had our second Programme Committee meeting to explore the possibility of designing and launching a Master's programme in the area of languages and linguistics. We had a fruitful and constructive discussion together with our external committee members, Prof Stefanie Pillai from Universiti Malaya and Mr Keith Thong Yuet Sheng from University Book Store Malaysia. They bring in an external voice from academia and industry.

Our Sunway team consists of Prof Tamas Kiss, Assoc Prof and Head of CELS Nicholas Lee, Dr Farah Yunos, Dr Teh Hui Lin, Dr Christine Arthur, and Mr Edgar Yau.
