A strong showing by colleagues from the Centre for English Language Studies, Sunway University, at the 34th MELTA International Conference on English Language Education, held on 12–13 September 2026 at the Excelsior Hotel, Ipoh. This year’s theme, “Shaping the Future of Learning: Leadership and ELT Practitioners in Action,” brings together English language educators, researchers and leaders to explore current and emerging directions in the field.

Together, these presentations showcase the breadth of expertise within CELS in contemporary English language teaching and learning. From AI-supported writing and mixed-proficiency classrooms to inclusive pedagogy, feedback literacy, game-based learning and sustainable professional development, our colleagues are engaging with some of the most important questions currently shaping English language education.

It is particularly encouraging to see CELS represented not through a single area of specialisation, but through work that connects research, classroom practice, educational technology, inclusion and teacher development. This reflects our commitment at Sunway University to ensuring that research and innovation in English language education translate into meaningful learning experiences for students.

aniMéter Workshop, 17–23 August 2026 | Pap-sziget, Szentendre

The aniMéter Workshop Szentendre is the summer creative workshop of the Department of Arts at Partium Christian University, organised with the support of the Partium University Foundation and the Erasmus+ programme.

During the workshop, students are working on the development and production of the animated series Hungarians in Borneo, a collaborative project between Partium Christian University and Sunway University, Malaysia. Drawing inspiration from Szentendre’s distinctive natural and cultural environment, the workshop also connects with the creative traditions of the Szentendre Old Artists’ Colony, which celebrates its centenary this year.

The animated series explores the remarkable stories of Hungarian travellers and explorers in nineteenth-century Borneo. The first episode has already been completed, with two further episodes on János Xántus and his travels in Sarawak currently planned. The project will then turn to Francis Xavier Witti, with three episodes planned around his adventures and explorations in North Borneo (present-day Sabah). These stories are based on two academic books published by Sunway University Press as a result of collaboration between Centre for English Language Studies, Sunway University and Debreceni Egyetem (University of Debrecen).

Through animation, historical research and visual storytelling, Hungarians in Borneo aims to bring these little-known connections between Hungary and Borneo to a wider contemporary audience.

The Centre for English Language Studies (CELS) Sunway University was featured in the Vietnamese media this weekend when Prof Tamas Kiss delivered his opening keynote address at the International Conference on Applied Linguistics and Language Education in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The conference was organized by the University Of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, a long standing partner of Sunway University. In the past three years approx. 600 students from the two universities have participated in a virtual intercultural project, learning skills and competencies that prepare them for the 21st c. workplace.

The report says:
"Opening the series of plenary reports, Professor Tamas Kiss, from the Centre for English Studies, Sunway University (Malaysia), analyzed the impact of AI on foreign language teaching and learning. In his presentation, "Connecting the Dots: Creativity and AI in Language Teaching," he introduced the EDIT model, which consists of four components: Explore, Differentiate, Interrogate, and Transform. The model aims to develop creative thinking, enhance the ability to connect knowledge and ideas, and improve learners' learning capacity in the AI ​​era."

Yesterday a panel discussion was organized in the framework of the FEL1384: Cross-cultural communication, one of the popular free elective courses at Sunway University. The panelists, Ms Kamilla Balla, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Hungary, Kuala Lumpur, Associate Professor Dr Nicholas Lee, Head of CELS, and Mr Md Aaraf Azad, a Master’s student at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Sunway University, shared about their experiences on living in a different culture, about culture shock, values and stereotypes. The discussion was facilitated by Prof Tamas Kiss from CELS and Prof Esther Smidt, a visiting professor from West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
