🌐 UTM-UII Academic and Industrial Exchange 2026 🤝

The Biomedical Instrumentation and Electronics Research Group (bMIE) under the UTM Faculty of Electrical Engineering successfully hosted an international delegation from Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) from 23 to 26 June 2026. The cohort, led by Prof. Hendra Setiawan and Prof. Firmansyah Nur Budiman, along with 11 undergraduate students from Indonesia, Yemen, and Sudan, participated in a comprehensive four-day academic, industrial, and cultural program.

Key highlights of the visit included:

Academic Collaboration:
Prof. Hendra Setiawan and Prof. Firmansyah Nur Budiman served as evaluation panels for the 3rd-year Electrical Engineering Integrated Design Projects showcase, reinforcing a long-standing tradition of reciprocal expert exchange and peer review between UTM and UII.

Industrial Exposure:
delegation gained valuable manufacturing insights through technical tours at Beyonics Precision (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. in Kulai and Multi-Code Electronics Industries (M) Berhad, exploring advanced electronics production floors and automotive quality-testing facilities.

Cultural Immersion:
visit concluded with an experiential tour of Johor Bahru’s historical landmarks and the iconic Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the management and engineering teams at both Beyonics Precision and Multi-Code Electronics for generously hosting the technical tours and providing detailed operational insights.

Special thanks also go to the UTM FKE staff and students whose coordination and hospitality ensured the success of this cross-border initiative, bridging the gap between engineering theory and industrial practice.

Huge congrats to Dr Suhaila Isaak and her students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Chan Jia Ming, Joshua Looi Kin-U, Ix Shen Loo and Lee Yen Fei, for winning the Silver Award in the prestigious international Micron MIMORY Awards Competition for their project, 'Beyond the Bucket Effect: A Multivariate Adaptive Refresh Controller for DRAM'.

It is a low-overhead ML-powered refresh controller that's smarter about when DRAM actually needs refreshing. Their work resulted in 43.80% fewer refresh operations and 22.57% better energy-read latency efficiency.

The team was sponsored to the award ceremony held in Taiwan.

From Malaysia to the Global Stage!

Huge congratulations to Team Teh Tarik for being named a Finalist in the prestigious Micron MIMORY Awards 2026! 🚀

The Micron MIMORY (Memory Innovation & Management for Optimizing Reliability and Yield) Awards is a prestigious pan-Asian competition organized by Micron Technology Taiwan and the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) College of Semiconductor Research.

It aims to challenge university students across Asia to innovate in semiconductor technology and memory systems. Team Teh Tarik from Electronic & Computer Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants across the continent to be one of the top finalists. They are headed to Taiwan for the final round at NTHU on April 30th, 2026.

Representing our innovation in semiconductor engineering, the team—comprising Chan Jia Ming, Joshua Looi Kin-U, Ix Shen Loo, and Lee Yen Fei, under the expert guidance of Dr. Suhaila Isaak—is making waves in Taiwan.

The Project Entry: 'Beyond the Bucket Effect: A Multivariate Adaptive Refresh Controller for DRAM'

In the world of high-performance computing, DRAM efficiency is everything. The team developed a low-overhead, ML-powered controller that intelligently manages "refresh" operations.

The Impact:
✅ 43.80% fewer refresh operations.
✅ 22.57% improvement in energy-read latency efficiency.

These results were verified using industry-standard tools like Ramulator 2.0 and DRAMPower 5, proving that smarter memory management is the future of sustainable AI and hardware.
