UNU-IIGH, in collaboration with the Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Section of the Ministry Of Health, Malaysia (KEMENTERIAN KESIHATAN MALAYSIA), has launched Phase 1 of the Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop.

Over four days, the workshop focuses on strengthening key capacities in strategic planning, data use, and performance management to build stronger health systems.

The first day covered core monitoring and evaluation (M&E) concepts and approaches, such as realist impact evaluation and implementation research; the second day covered M&E tools, including theories of change and logic frameworks.

Throughout the week, the work will continue to focus on improving the use of evidence for decision-making and strengthening institutional capacity.

Dr. Revati Phalkey, Director of UNU-IIGH, met with YBrs. Dr. Ismuni Bohari, Deputy Director General (Public Health) at the Ministry of Health Malaysia, for a courtesy call to discuss avenues for enhanced collaboration.

The meeting included colleagues from the Ministry of Health:

Dr. Revati was accompanied by Vithiya Sathivelu, Head of Strategy and Partnerships at UNU-IIGH, for the discussion.

The conversation was positive and invigorating, focusing on strengthening partnerships between UNU-IIGH and the Ministry of Health Malaysia to advance global health initiatives at the national level.

UNU-IIGH has officially assumed the co-chairship of the UN Food Systems Task Force (UNTF), representing the United Nations University in efforts to advance food systems transformation.

This leadership role comes as the Food Systems Coordination Hub, hosted by FAO, begins implementing its 2026–2027 Biennial Work Plan, with a strong focus on practical implementation and financing, including in complex settings.

United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) and the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) are pleased to announce the release of the 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Held over two days in New Delhi in November 2025, the consultation brought together representatives from Sri Lanka, India, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, alongside other regional experts and practitioners.

Building on a joint desk‑research report by UNU‑IIGH and CSEP that mapped the institutions and platforms shaping global and regional health governance, the workshop served as a brainstorming forum to gather country and expert insights on the region's aspirations. The discussions focused on identifying what South and Southeast Asia require from global and regional health institutions, and on examining how countries across the region can more effectively shape evolving governance frameworks and mechanisms of cooperation. The desk‑research report will be published in the coming weeks.

This Summary captures the consultation’s key insights and will contribute directly to UNU‑IIGH and CSEP’s ongoing research on enhancing Asia’s engagement in global and regional health governance in a complex shifting environment.

UNU-IIGH’s Policy Research Associate 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 and Policy Research Lead 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗰𝗼 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘀, together with 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗷𝗼 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 (UNEP Timor-Leste), 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗶𝗿𝗮 (Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System – CRISH App), and 𝗦𝗶𝗺ã𝗼 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀 (National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics of Timor-Leste), recently co-facilitated a three‑day 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶‑𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 in Dili, Timor‑Leste.

This workshop is part of the “Enhancing Early Warning Systems to Build Greater Resilience to Hydro‑Meteorological Hazards in Timor‑Leste (FP171)” initiative, bringing together government ministries, technical agencies, frontline practitioners, and development partners.

Co-hosted by UNU‑IIGH, Green Climate Fund, UN Environment Programme, World Health Organization, National Directorate of Meteorology and Geophysics of Timor-Leste, and the Ministry of Health of Timor Leste, the workshop aimed to equip participants with the tools, data, and cross‑sectoral processes needed to better anticipate, respond to, and mitigate the health impacts of climate variability and extremes.

UNU-IIGH extends its congratulations to YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Razman Jarmin on his appointment as Pro Vice-Chancellor of the UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus.

In this morning's courtesy visit, Dr. Revati Phalkey, Director of UNU-IIGH, met with Prof. Dato’ Dr. Razman to discuss ongoing collaboration between UKM and UNU-IIGH, building on momentum from last year’s successful joint working group meeting.

Dr. Phalkey was joined by Ms Jee Jee Kiu, Head of Operations, and Ms Vithiya Sathivelu, Head of Strategy and Partnerships.

The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing joint initiatives and strengthening institutional collaboration in the coming year.

As part of the 2026 UNU International Women’s Day ( ) campaign, we highlight UNU’s commitment to advancing gender equality through research, evidence, and advocacy.

This year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” calls for action to break down structural barriers to equal justice.

Dr. Revati Phalkey from UNU International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) and Rayyan Sulieman from United Nations University-FLORES — currently visiting the UNU-IIGH office in Kuala Lumpur — share insights from their work and reflect on the importance of addressing these structural challenges.
