A Proud Moment for INFORMM | MDBD 2026

A big thank you to Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) for featuring the 8th International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics & Biomarker Discovery 2026 (MDBD 2026), organised by the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), USM.

With the theme “Redefining Healthcare: Multi-Omics Driven Diagnostics and Therapeutics,” MDBD 2026 brought together more than 150 scientists, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry representatives from Malaysia and abroad to exchange knowledge and explore the latest advances in molecular diagnostics, biomarker discovery, precision medicine, and healthcare technologies.

We were honoured to welcome Professor Dr. Habibah A. Wahab, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), USM, who represented the Vice-Chancellor of USM and officiated the conference.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Microscope: Maintenance & Handling Workshop, jointly organized by INFORMM and Matrix Optics.
This workshop is specially designed for researchers, lecturers, laboratory personnel, and staff who regularly utilize microscopy in their research, teaching, and laboratory operations.
Participants will gain practical knowledge on microscope handling, routine maintenance, and best practices to ensure optimal instrument performance and longevity.

Bayan Lepas, 23 May 2026 – The Beach Clean-Up Activity 2026 returned to Pantai Teluk Bayu, Teluk Kumbar. Carrying the theme “Clean, Care, Contribute”, the programme aimed to raise greater awareness among participants regarding proper waste disposal practices at the beach. The event was successfully organised by the Committee of Industry and Community Network & Alumni of the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, in collaboration with the Environment Protection Education (EPE) Hub & Green Ambassadors of the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), and the Penang King’s Scout Association. The activity involved participation from students, staff, industry representatives, and members of the local community outside USM. A total of 47 USM students and staff participated, along with 17 scout members, sponsors, alumni, guests, and several staff family members. Staff from the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Perbandaran (JPP) of the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang were also present to ensure the programme ran smoothly and safely. The programme commenced at 7.00 a.m. and concluded at approximately 12.00 p.m. Two USM buses were provided to transport participants and programme materials to the venue. Among the core activities conducted was a Zumba session led by invited guests before the beach clean-up began. This year, participants successfully collected 91 kg of waste, demonstrating the tangible environmental impact of the activity. The activity also served as a valuable platform to strengthen networking and collaboration among individuals from universities, industry, and the local community, while enabling INFORMM members and alumni to remain connected. This programme contributed towards several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

INFORMM Open Lab Day 2026

Program INFORMM Open Lab Day 2026 anjuran Institut Penyelidikan Perubatan Molekul (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), telah berjaya dilaksanakan pada 16 & 17 April 2026 secara bersemuka dan dalam talian. Program ini dianjurkan sebagai platform berfokus untuk menghubungkan keupayaan penyelidikan dengan aplikasi dunia sebenar, di samping memperkukuh agenda penglibatan industri dan meningkatkan keterlihatan perkhidmatan penyelidikan serta teknologi INFORMM. Program ini turut menarik penyertaan lebih 100 orang peserta yang terdiri daripada wakil industri, ahli akademik, penyelidik dan pelajar pascasiswazah.
Aktiviti program merangkumi sesi pembentangan kepakaran, forum industri, sesi konsultasi, demonstrasi makmal secara langsung, serta sesi perkongsian teknologi oleh penyedia utama seperti Thermo Fisher Scientific, Chemopharm Sdn. Bhd., Anton Paar Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. dan Straits Scientific (M) Sdn. Bhd.. Dalam majlis yang sama, turut dilancarkan Price List and Capability Brochure bagi Perkhidmatan Penyelidikan dan Teknologi INFORMM, yang mencerminkan kesiapsiagaan INFORMM sebagai rakan penyelidikan profesional. Program ini dirasmikan oleh Timbalan Pengarah INFORMM, Dr. Eugene Ong Boon Beng, yang mewakili Pengarah INFORMM.
Melalui program ini, INFORMM secara tidak langsung telah menyumbang kepada pencapaian Matlamat Pembangunan Lestari (SDG), khususnya SDG 9: Industri, Inovasi dan Infrastruktur melalui pengukuhan ekosistem penyelidikan dan teknologi; SDG 17: Perkongsian demi Matlamat melalui jaringan antara universiti, industri dan komuniti penyelidikan; serta SDG 4: Pendidikan Berkualiti menerusi pendedahan ilmu, teknologi dan pengalaman pembelajaran kepada peserta daripada pelbagai latar belakang. Pendekatan hibrid yang digunakan juga membolehkan capaian program diperluas kepada khalayak yang lebih pelbagai.
Program ini berjaya memperkukuh peranan INFORMM sebagai platform yang menterjemahkan penyelidikan kepada impak yang bermakna, selaras dengan komitmen USM untuk memperkasa inovasi, kolaborasi industri dan pemindahan ilmu. Semoga penganjuran program seperti ini dapat diteruskan pada masa hadapan bagi memperluas jaringan strategik, meningkatkan keterlihatan perkhidmatan penyelidikan universiti dan memperkukuh hubungan antara makmal, penyelidik dan industri.

The INFORMM Open Lab Day 2026 programme, organised by the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was successfully held on 16 & 17 April 2026 through both face-to-face and online participation. The programme was organised as a focused platform to connect research capabilities with real-world applications while strengthening industry engagement and enhancing the visibility of INFORMM’s research and technology services. More than 100 participants took part in the programme, including representatives from industry, academia, the research community, and students.
The programme featured expertise pitching sessions, industry forums, consultation sessions, and live laboratory demonstrations, together with technology-sharing sessions by Thermo Fisher Scientific, Chemopharm Sdn. Bhd., Anton Paar Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., and Straits Scientific (M) Sdn. Bhd. The opening ceremony was officiated by Deputy Director Dr. Eugene Ong Boon Beng, and the event also marked the launch of INFORMM’s Price List and Capability Brochure for Research and Technology Services, reflecting INFORMM’s readiness as a professional research partner.
Through this programme, INFORMM indirectly contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through the strengthening of research and technology ecosystems; SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between the university, industry and the research community; and SDG 4: Quality Education through knowledge sharing, technology exposure and learning opportunities for participants from different backgrounds. The hybrid approach adopted also enabled the programme to reach a wider audience. This SDG mapping is an interpretation based on the programme elements reported by USM News Portal.
The programme successfully reinforced INFORMM’s role as a platform that translates research into meaningful impact, in line with USM’s commitment to advancing innovation, industry collaboration and knowledge transfer. It is hoped that similar programmes will continue in the future to expand strategic networks, strengthen the visibility of university research services, and bridge laboratory expertise with industrial application.

INFORMM Strengthens Industry Collaboration with Thermo Scientific for MDBD 2026

PENANG, 29 April 2026 – The Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully conducted a strategic discussion session with representatives from Thermo Fisher Scientific to advance planning for the upcoming International Conference on Molecular Diagnostics and Biomarker Discovery (MDBD) 2026.

The session was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aziah Ismail (Director, INFORMM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Venugopal Balakrishnan (Deputy Director), and members of the MDBD organising committee (Dr. Kumitaa Theva Dass, Dr Norsyahida Ariffin, Dr Lai Ngit Sin and Mrs. Dyana Zakria), alongside Thermo Scientific representatives Ms. Imelia Wong (Country Manager) and Dr. Andrian Yeo Eng Hwa (Head of Biosciene Division).

The discussion focused on shaping MDBD 2026 into a high-impact platform that integrates academic excellence with industry innovation. Scheduled tentatively for 19–20 August 2026, the conference will feature a comprehensive programme comprising pre-conference hands-on workshops, scientific presentations, industry-led technical sessions, and a dedicated forum on translational diagnostics.

A key highlight of the meeting was the alignment on strengthening industry–academic collaboration, particularly through Thermo Scientific’s potential role in providing advanced instrumentation, technical expertise, and application-driven training. The collaboration is envisioned to extend beyond the conference into a sustainable partnership model, including shared laboratory services and capacity-building initiatives.

The proposed programme will emphasise practical and reproducible outcomes, with workshops designed to equip participants with hands-on skills in emerging diagnostic technologies such as CRISPR and antibody-based platforms. In addition, live instrument demonstrations and technical sessions will offer participants direct exposure to cutting-edge solutions in molecular diagnostics.

The meeting also addressed key operational aspects, including speaker selection, marketing strategies, sponsorship opportunities, and the development of technical materials. Both parties agreed on the importance of producing meaningful outputs such as technical bulletins, scientific posters, and potential publication materials to maximise the conference’s impact.

Importantly, MDBD 2026 will serve as a strategic launchpad for long-term collaboration, supporting INFORMM’s role as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) in Diagnostics Platforms. The partnership aims to foster innovation, enhance research translation, and strengthen Malaysia’s position in molecular diagnostics and biomarker discovery.

The session concluded with a shared commitment to deliver a high-quality, industry-engaged conference that not only advances scientific knowledge but also builds sustainable networks for future collaboration.
