The University of Science Malaysia (USM) has taken an important step in widening its international academic footprint by representing Malaysia for the first time at the Seventh Joint Summer School, “Connecting Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe,” hosted by the University of Zagreb in Croatia. This high-level programme brought together scholars, diplomatic representatives, international organisations and industry partners from both regions to discuss cross-cutting topics including sustainable development, regional security and climate change, with a focus on combining academic insight and practical, cross-regional experience. USM’s participation, supported by the Malaysian Embassy in Zagreb and funded in part through USM’s Internationalisation Incentive Scheme, is both symbolic and strategic: it signals national commitment to higher education internationalisation and opens formal pathways for research collaboration, joint publications and academic exchange. Two USM presenters contributed substantive disciplinary breadth. Dr Nik Norliati Fitri Md Nor examined demographic ageing through the comparative lens of Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe, identifying shared challenges and opportunities, while Dr Siti Rahyla Rahmat emphasised integrated management approaches for building disaster-resilient economies across regions, stressing that disaster risk and economic resilience must be addressed holistically. Beyond the formal sessions at the University of Zagreb, a follow-up visit to the University of Dubrovnik provided practical space to explore institutional linkages and programme-level cooperation that can benefit faculty, researchers and mobile students. For international mobility offices and academic units considering partnership development, this engagement illustrates a replicable model - combine targeted funding incentives, embassy facilitation and participation in regionally focused academic forums to catalyse durable collaborations. USM’s inaugural role in the summer school not only enhances Malaysia’s academic visibility in Southeast Europe but also creates tangible opportunities for student and staff mobility, joint research agendas and long-term institutional partnerships.
