Eleven students from the Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Occupational Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) participated in a five-day Joint Class Programme with Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya.
The UPM delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Juliana binti Jalaludin, Advisor of the UPMโUNAIR International Mobility Programme, FPSK UPM. The programme brought together students and academics from UPM and UNAIR through academic learning, guest lectures, industrial exposure and cultural experiences.
๐ Guest Lectures and Campus Experience
The programme continued with guest lectures on key topics in occupational and environmental health, giving students the opportunity to learn from academics from both institutions.
Indah Lutfiya, SKM, MKes delivered a session on Health Risk Assessment (HRA), focusing on identifying and assessing workplace health risks.
This was followed by Dr. Putri Ayuni Alayyannur, SKM, MKKK, who shared insights on Hygiene Standards and Occupational Exposure Limits, strengthening studentsโ understanding of workplace hygiene and exposure risks.
Adding an environmental health perspective, Prof. Dr. Juliana binti Jalaludin delivered a guest lecture on Indoor Air Quality, highlighting the importance of healthy indoor environments and their connection to environmental and occupational health.
The sessions were complemented by a fun Kahoot activity, bringing UPM and UNAIR students together in a friendly learning competition. Congratulations to Tommy Alvindo (UNAIR), Raja Nabil (UPM) and Khalisah (UPM) for achieving the top three scores! ๐
Beyond the classroom, UPM students explored the UNAIR campus and interacted with their Indonesian peers, creating opportunities for knowledge sharing, friendship and cultural exchange.
๐ญ From Theory to Real-World Practice
Students visited PT Fertilizer Inti Technology at the Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE), Gresik, gaining practical exposure to workplace safety and occupational health practices.
The visit included a safety induction, workplace observations and an introduction to indoor air quality monitoring equipment. Students then applied their knowledge by preparing a Health Risk Assessment based on workplace conditions and presenting their findings to industry representatives.
This experience helped students connect classroom learning with real-world workplace risk assessment and management.
๐ Learning, Friendship and Culture
Beyond academic and industrial activities, the programme also provided an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Indonesia.
One of the highlights was a visit to Mount Bromo, where students travelled by jeep, experienced the spectacular sunrise and explored the Sea of Sand, Savanna and Bromo Crater.
The experience not only allowed students to appreciate Indonesiaโs unique natural environment but also strengthened friendships between UPM and UNAIR students through shared experiences, conversations and memorable moments.
๐ค Building Global Learning Together
The Joint Class Programme provided students with a valuable opportunity to learn, connect, explore and grow beyond borders.
From the classroom to industry, and from Surabaya to Mount Bromo, the programme combined academic learning, professional exposure, friendship and cultural exchange.
โจ More than an academic visit โ it was a journey of knowledge, friendship and global learning.
