Department of Community Health Welcomes Delegates from Japan.

Yesterday, the Department of Community Health had the pleasure of welcoming Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taro Kanno and Ms Desak Ayu Clara Dewanti from the University of Tokyo, as well as Dr. Shunichi Tada from Toyo University, Japan. The delegates are also members of the Resilience Engineering Association – Asia Chapter (REA-A).

The visit provided an opportunity for fruitful discussions on the future direction of REA-A, including strategies to expand membership and engagement in Malaysia, as well as opportunities for Malaysian academics and professionals to contribute to the association's activities. Discussions also focused on promoting the REA-A Young Talent Programme, which aims to nurture future leaders in resilience engineering and related fields.

The visit also provided an opportunity to learn about the delegates' ongoing work in disaster management, healthcare facility safety, and resilience engineering. Discussions explored potential areas of collaboration and how researchers from UPM could contribute as international collaborators in future projects related to resilience, healthcare systems, and disaster management.

The Department was also joined by colleagues from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Dr. Saliza Mohd Elias and Prof. Dr. Vivien H.C. How, as well as Dr. Salimah Japar from the Department of Nursing. The discussion was further enriched by the presence of representatives from the Malaysian Society for Environmental Epidemiology (MySEE), Dr Nur Azalina Suzianti and Dr Afiqah Syamimi, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in resilience engineering, environmental health, and disaster management.

We look forward to strengthening collaboration and fostering academic partnerships between Malaysia and Japan in advancing resilience research, education, and capacity building.

A recent sharing session on the current Ebola outbreak situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda was featured on Bernama Radio, where Dr Siti Aisah from the Department of Community Health shared and discussed the public health implications of the outbreak.

The discussion highlighted the challenges of managing outbreaks occurring in conflict affected settings, where disruptions to healthcare services, surveillance systems, logistics, and community engagement can complicate outbreak response efforts.

The session also touched on the importance of effective public health strategies to contain outbreaks at the epicentre, including rapid detection, contact tracing, infection prevention and control, risk communication, and multisectoral coordination.

Emerging infectious diseases continue to highlight the importance of preparedness, surveillance, and strong public health systems at both national and global levels.

Sejauh mana ancaman Hantavirus perlu dipandang serius oleh Malaysia? Adakah ia sekadar isu import kes terpencil atau berpotensi menjadi cabaran kesihatan awam serantau?

19/05/2026

RUANG BICARA
18 Mei 2026, Isnin
Masa: 9.00 – 10.00 Malam
