Experts caution on antibiotics abuse
Experts have described antimicrobial resistance as a situation where organisms develop resistance to drugs or medicine designed to exterminate them. They made this disclosure while featuring on the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Ogun State, FUNAAB Radio 89.5FM live interactive programme, Boiling Point. According to the President, Antimicrobial Resistance Club of FUNAAB, Mr. Mujeeb Akaso, the organism spread through human negligence and consumption of animals or farm produce that have been contaminated, adding that the organism can also spread through the abuse of antibiotics.
The President, Association of Veterinary Medical Students of FUNAAB, Mr. Quadri Meshioye, revealed that antimicrobial organism spread through the consumption of large spectrum of antibiotics and neglect of doctor's prescriptions. He warned the general populace to desist from the abuse of antibiotics, stick to doctor's prescriptions and make sure they complete their drug dosage. Meanwhile, a member of the International Veterinary Students Association (IVSA FUNAAB), Miss. Tolulope Kayode, said AMR poses a great threat to the public and global community in general. She urged the people to use drugs, especially antibiotics responsibly and desist from sharing drugs, adding that farmers and food processors should allow the withdrawal period of the antibiotics they had administered to their animals to lapse before slaughtering the animals, saying with that society would be rid-off of the dangers of antimicrobial resistance organisms.
