Our great Faculty of Agriculture recently hosted the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi. It was indeed a memorable occasion.

During the visit, the Vice-Chancellor toured several facilities within the Faculty, including the Research Farm and the Demonstration Farm. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the Faculty continues to function effectively, emphasizing that Agriculture remains the backbone of the University and the nation at large. He further assured us that any contribution aimed at advancing the Faculty and placing it where it rightly belongs will always receive the full support of his administration.

During the visit, the President of NAAS, Comr. Okoro Miracle Ebube, on behalf of the Swiss students and farm hands, appealed to the Vice-Chancellor for the provision of a bus to convey students to the Research Farm on a daily basis, as the stress of commuting there has greatly increased. In response, the Vice-Chancellor assured the NAAS President that the request would be considered and addressed.

At the climax of the event, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Akeem Oyerinde, alongside the NAAS President, Comr. Okoro Miracle Ebube, and other distinguished staff members of the Faculty of Agriculture, presented the Vice-Chancellor with an Award of Merit in appreciation of his courtesy visit and his continued show of concern and support for the Faculty.

FARMER VS HERDER

WHO IS REALLY AT WAR?
A farmer wakes up to protect his crops.
A herder wakes up to protect his cattle.
Both are just trying to eat.
Both depend on the land.
Yet somehow…
they keep clashing.
Is it really farmer vs herder?
Or poor systems forcing two livelihoods to collide?
No clear grazing routes.
No clear land use plans.
No real conversation.
When systems fail, people fight.

IF GMOs ARE THE FUTURE, WHO PROTECTS THE FARMER?
Behind every seed is a farmer.
A person taking risks, season after season.
GMOs promise better harvests and food security.
But for many farmers, especially smallholders, one question remains:
👉 Who stands with the farmer?
If seeds can no longer be saved…
If decisions move from the farm to contracts and policies…
If access depends on money and permission…
Then progress must be careful, not careless.
Technology should work with farmers, not over them.
And any future that ignores the farmer’s voice is incomplete.
👉 Who should protect farmers in a GMO-driven future: government, farmer associations, or the companies themselves?

The students are expected to present practical ideals on either of the following ;
1.A simple innovation to a major agricultural bottle neck in Nigeria

2 how technology can enable small hold Farmers in Nigeria earn five times more without increase in production cost

3.An Agricultural value chain the university can dominate and how student can lead the Innovation

Africa needs more food.
But should it come from genetically modified crops?
Supporters say GMOs:
Increase yield
Resist pests
Reduce food shortages
Critics say:
Long-term effects are uncertain
Farmers may lose seed independence
Control shifts from farmers to corporations
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Africa cannot avoid this conversation anymore.
GMOs are already part of the global food system.
The real question is not if —
but how, where, and who controls it.
