NANS JCC CRS KICKS AGAINST FORCED REVERSION OF 214 UNICAL LAW STUDENTS
The National Association of Nigerian Students, Joint Campus Council, Cross River State Axis, has rejected the University of Calabar’s directive asking 214 Law students to return to their original departments and restart from Year One.
In a press statement signed by JCC Chairman, Comrade Victor Antigha Asuquo and dated August 10, 2026, NANS said the affected students gained admission into the Faculty of Law through an internal departmental transfer process approved by the university and spent two years there.
The Council described the decision as a “drastic and disproportionate response to an administrative failure” and insisted that students should not be made to suffer for an irregularity they did not cause.
While acknowledging UNICAL’s concerns about institutional risk, NANS urged management to first explore regularisation of the students’ admission with the National Universities Commission, NUC, and the Council of Legal Education before enforcing any reversion.
*NANS is demanding:*
1. Full disclosure of officers who approved the transfers
2. Proof that UNICAL has engaged NUC and the Council of Legal Education
3. Preservation of academic credits and CGPA if reversion is unavoidable
4. Guaranteed priority readmission into Law for affected students
5. Meaningful compensation beyond tuition refunds for lost time and career delay
NANS said it has briefed the national leadership and will escalate the matter if it is not resolved, but remains open to dialogue with the university management.
The statement was copied to the UNICAL Vice Chancellor, Dean of Law, Cross River State Commissioner for Education, and NANS National Leadership.
