NOMENCLATURE OF THE PROGRAMME
BACHELOR OF FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE
The Bachelor of Fisheries & Aquaculture (B.Sc) programme in Chukwuemeka
Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam Campus Anambra State is highly
structured to meet with the global rising demands of Fisheries and Aquaculture of
the 21 st century.
Seasoned lecturers and researchers of proven professional ability and integrity
are on ground to facilitate the proper upbringing of our students.
The catchment area, Igbariam is the food basket of the region and this fact is at
the fore in the philosophy and programme objectives.
The Department strives to maintain the lead in Fisheries and Aquaculture to
satisfy the yearnings of the Agricultural zones and the state at large.
Philosophy and Mission Statement
The philosophy and mission statement underlying the programme of Fisheries
and Aquaculture are aimed at achieving the goals and objectives of the National
policy on Industrialization and Self Reliance.
These will be achieved through:
(i) Practical exposure to application of Aquaculture & Fisheries Management
and Water Resources Management.
(ii) Developing the Fisheries & Aquaculture products, entrepreneurial
knowledge, sense of public responsibility and a spirit of self reliance.
(ii) Nurturing of partnership between the Fisheries Scientists/Fish Farmers and
industries for effective programme delivery.
(iv) Creating an awareness and understanding of the moral, ethical, legal, and
professional obligations needed to function as part of a professional
enterprise while protecting human health, welfare and the environment in
a global society.
(v) Creating awareness and understanding of the need to develop leadership
and team building skills to maximize the benefits of Aquaculture and
Fisheries Management.
(vi) Producing graduate who will be skilled in bringing innovations in areas of
Fisheries and Aquaculture in Nigeria through research.

NB: a,b,c & d have been thoroughly investigated by NUC and the Department has
SUCCESSFULLY PASSED RESOURCE VERIFICATION and authorized to admit
students since 2018 / 2019 Academic Session.
To further cultivate the entrepreneurial skills of the students, the COOU
Management has already entered into preparatory –Cluster Schemes with the
State Ministry of Agriculture. This idea enables EVERY STUDENT including 100
Levels, to own 2 or 3 practical -cum -commercial Fish ponds. The
student is expected to grow financially, produce fingerlings, fishes and be
financially self-sufficient, even as a student.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS EXPECTED OF OUR GRADUANDS.
- Graduate will have competence in conceptual management and
entrepreneurial skills;
- Graduates will acquire sufficient practical and analytical competence to
enable them manage sustainable fish production schemes
- Graduates will have competence in communication skills and be able to
present research field reports with convincing arguments clearly either in
writing or oral;
- Graduates will be equipped with information technology skills required for
global communication especially in various areas of Fisheries Aquaculture.
- The graduate will also be adequately equipped to manage the fin - fish and
shell fish resources of the numerous water bodies that abound in Nigeria
and other countries.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
UTME requirements: Candidates must have credit passes at O’level in 5
WASC/GCE/NECO subjects including English, Mathematics, Chemistry,
Biology/Agricultural Science and any other one subject from the following
Physics Geography, Economics, Health Science and Home Economics.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Fisheries and Aquaculture entails the application of biochemical and
physical sciences in the Fish and the processing and preservation of such
fisheries products as meat and other Aquaculture related products.
Job opportunities for graduates of the proposed Department are as follows:
