ABSUTH MANAGEMENT BOARD PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO ABSU VICE-CHANCELLOR

The newly constituted Management Board of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), on Thursday, 15th May, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room.

Welcoming the delegation, the Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to the newly inaugurated Management Board of the Teaching Hospital, led by its Chairman, Dr. Ezinne C. Kalu, describing the visit as a clear demonstration of cordiality and a commitment to fostering a productive working relationship between the University Management and the Teaching Hospital Board.

Professor Okeudo emphasized the critical role of the Teaching Hospital in the training of the University’s medical students, noting that after completing their academic coursework, students proceed to ABSUTH for clinical training, where they acquire the practical skills and experience necessary to become competent medical professionals.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the presence of a functional and proactive Management Board is essential for the continued growth and development of the Teaching Hospital. He expressed confidence that the newly constituted Board would contribute significantly towards repositioning ABSUTH for greater progress and assured members of the University Management’s unwavering support and cooperation.

Professor Okeudo further encouraged the Board to leverage their positions to attract funding and strategic support for the Teaching Hospital, emphasizing that adequate funding, sound policies, and effective oversight are indispensable for sustainable institutional growth and improved healthcare delivery.
He also prayed for divine wisdom, strength, and expertise for the Board members as they undertake the important responsibility of repositioning the institution for greater excellence.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairman of the ABSUTH Management Board, Dr. Ezinne C. Kalu, expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for the warm reception accorded the delegation.

She also conveyed profound appreciation to the Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for entrusting them with the opportunity to serve in this important capacity.

Dr. Kalu noted that ABSUTH has evolved beyond being merely a patient-care centre to becoming a vital hub for medical knowledge, clinical training, and professional development. She affirmed the Board’s commitment to strengthening institutional governance, fostering strategic partnerships with both public and private stakeholders, and ensuring the continuous advancement of the Teaching Hospital.

She commended the staff of the Teaching Hospital for their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to service, while assuring the University Management of the Board’s support and sustained collaboration.

In a vote of thanks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and member of the newly constituted ABSUTH Management Board, Professor Gazie Okpara, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for granting prompt approval for the meeting and commended members of the Board for taking time to engage with the University Management.

REBUTTAL TO THE ALLEGATION OF EXPLOITATION OF STUDENTS IN ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Following a misleading and wide publication on social media, alleging extortion of students of Abia state university by lecturers, we wish to categorically state that these allegations are false and propagated to damage the soaring positive image and good works in the institution under the Governor Abia state, and Visitor to the university.

It is malicious for anyone to make sweeping accusations against the entire institution and its lecturers without a specific example, or actionable information that will help the efforts of management to apprehend perpetrators of such alleged misconduct.

We strongly urge all media platforms to desist from spreading unverified information capable of attracting legal action from the university but uphold the ethics of responsible journalism at all times.

Abia State University management maintains its policy of zero tolerance to any form of exploitation or misconduct, while remaining committed to academic excellence, integrity, and the welfare of its students.

VICE-CHANCELLOR COMMENDS ABSU STUDENTS FOR EMERGING WINNERS AT ALL NIGERIAN YOUTH DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP 2026.

The Vice-Chancellor, Abia State University, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, on behalf of Management and Senate has commeded the outstanding students of the University that emerged winners at the prestigious All Nigerian Youth Debate Championship held at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed satisfaction at their excellent performance and commended them for making the University proud.

He described the achievement as a testament to the quality of education available in the University and directed that the students be given letters of commendation in recognition of their achievement, while encouraging others to emulate them.

Presenting the students to the Vice-Chancellor and management, the Dean, Students Affairs, Professor Dick Uduma, explained the process leading to the remarkable achievement by the students, noting that they distinguished themselves among participants from various higher institutions across the country to clinch the top position in the highly competitive debate championship which held at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

Earlier during the 286th regular meeting, the University Senate had in an unanimous response applauded the students for their achievement, noting that such accomplishment contribute significantly to enhancing the University’s reputation and visibility across the country.

The success of the students at the All Nigeria Youth Debate Championship underscores ABSU’s growing prominence in academic and intellectual engagements, as well as its commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates equipped for leadership and national development.

MDCN INDUCTS 102 NEW MEDICAL DOCTORS FOR THE 32ND (BATCH A) SWEARING-IN CEREMONY OF ABSU

Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has graduated a total of 102 new medical doctors in her 32nd (Batch A) induction/swearing-in ceremony by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

The induction ceremony, which was held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Aba location of the College of Medicine, drew dignitaries from the Government, academia, healthcare industry as well as proud families and well-wishers.

Declaring the ceremony open, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Gazie Okpara, described the College of Medicine as the flagship of the University, that attracts the priority attention of the State Government at all times.

He pointed out that since the inception of the current administration, the College has recorded remarkable achievements, including full accreditation, improved infrastructure, enhanced manpower, and sustained attention to staff welfare.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed deep appreciation to the Governor of Abia State and Visitor to the University, Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR, for his unwavering support and visionary leadership, which he said has continued to reposition the University for excellence.

While congratulating the inductees, he commended their resilience and dedication, urging them to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics. He proudly noted that ABSU medical graduates have maintained an unblemished record, free from professional misconduct or disciplinary actions.
“You have been trained and refined by world-class teachers to face challenges anywhere in the world. Go and make impacts, the sky is your starting point,” he charged.

He further commended the Provost of the College, Professor Chuks Kamanu, and the entire staff for their collective efforts in sustaining the quality and reputation of the programme.

Delivering his address, the Provost, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Chuks Kamanu, expressed gratitude to the Governor, Dr. Alex Otti OFR, for his attention and unprecedented committment to the transformation of the College. He also commended the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their administrative support.

He acknowledged the Chief Medical Director of the University Teaching Hospital for fostering a cordial relationship with the College and ensuring a conducive environment for clinical training.

To the graduands, Professor Kamanu stated, “You have gone through the crucible. We make no apologies for the rigorous training you received, as it was designed to bring out the best in you. Your predecessors are excelling across the globe, and we are confident you will keep the flag flying.”

In her remarks, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Professor Fatima Kyari, represented by Dr. M. Tijani, congratulated the graduands on their successful academic journey. He also enlightened them on the procedures for internship and licensing, emphasizing the importance of compliance with professional regulations in their medical careers.

The Best Graduating Student, Dr. Ogechi Otuechere, in her valedictory speech, expressed profound gratitude to God, her family, lecturers, and colleagues for their support throughout the demanding journey of medical training.

She described the experience as both challenging and transformative, noting that the moment is a dream come true, which is the result of culmination of hard work, and resilience.

In a vote of thanks, Professor Ijeoma Nduka, immediate past CMD ABSUTH Aba, expressed appreciation to the University Management, faculty members, MDCN officials, parents, and guests for contributing to the success of the induction ceremony.

ABSU PARTNERS TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION TO BOOST GLOBAL RANKING AND VISIBILITY

Abia State University, Uturu(ABSU), has taken a strategic step towards enhancing its global presence and academic reputation through a seminar organized by the University in collaboration with Times Higher Education.

The seminar, which was held on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026, was aimed at repositioning the University for improved global visibility, stronger reputation, and a more competitive standing in international university rankings.

Speaking at the seminar, the Vice-Chancellor Abia State University Uturu, Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Gazie Okpara, described the initiative as timely and strategic, stating that the University is committed to adopting innovative measures that will improve its research output, academic visibility, and overall global competitiveness.

He further emphasized the need for staff to key into the University's vision of becoming a globally recognized institution by increasing their research contributions and publishing in reputable journals.

Delivering his presentation, the Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Times Higher Education, Dr. Victor Okeugo, underscored the importance of global recognition for higher institutions. He explained that universities must deliberately align with international standards to gain visibility and relevance in the global academic community.

Dr. Okeugo identified the consistent publication of high-quality research in internationally recognized and indexed platforms as a key requirement for attaining global rankings, adding that increased visibility not only reflects academic excellence but also enhances opportunities for international collaborations, research funding, and student exchange programs.

In his remark, the Chairman, University Ranking Committee, and Dean School of Postgraduate Studies ABSU, Professor Osita Ugbogu, expressed appreciation to Times Higher Education for the insightful session and their continued support towards advancing the University’s global outlook.
He also commended the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for prioritizing initiatives that will enhance ABSU’s ranking and visibility, while urging participants to translate the knowledge gained into actionable outcomes for a greater growth of the University.

In a vote of thanks, former Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Professor J.C. Igwe, appreciated the resource person and participants for their active engagement, noting that the seminar has provided a clear roadmap for strengthening ABSU’s research capacity and global relevance.
