The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities as part of its efforts to strengthen academic relevance and align higher education with global trends.
The commission announced the addition of the programmes to the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) in a circular addressed to all vice-chancellors.

The circular was released by the NUC spokesperson and signed by the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.

According to the commission, experts drawn from the Nigerian university system participated in the development of the 70 per cent national component of the new programmes in March 2025.
Universities are expected to develop the remaining 30 percent institutional component in line with CCMAS provisions.
The newly approved programmes include Artificial Intelligence, Classical Christian Education, Human Kinetics with a focus on sport management, Geomatics Engineering, Community Health Science, Intelligence and Security Studies, Islamic Economics and Finance, Parasitology and Entomology, Telecommunication Science, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Cooperative Economics and Management, Nuclear Science, and Nuclear Engineering.
The commission urged universities wishing to offer any of the new programmes to begin implementation in the 2025/2026 academic session, following a successful resource assessment visit.
Vice-Chancellors were also directed to circulate the approved CCMAS documents to relevant faculties, departments, and academic planning units.

The Federal University in Iyin-Ekiti to begin admission, staff recruitment September – VC

18th August 2025

By Abiodun Nejo

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, has said that the new institution will begin the admission process in September.

Prof. Aribisala said that the admission process would follow the National Universities Commission Resource Verification exercise taking place soon in the university.

The VC, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Sunday at a reception to celebrate the 90th birthday of his mother, Deaconess Felicia Aribisala, also canvassed support from well-meaning Nigerians to the institution, saying, “A technology-based institution of this nature is capital-intensive”.

He said, “The NUC is coming for Resource Verification of all the 36 programmes that we are trying to offer. As soon as they come, by the special grace of God, we have provided those things that will be needed.

“We have provided a modern laboratory for all the programmes. We have a library now. We have classrooms fixed.

“We have offices and furniture fixed. We have all of those things. So we are very confident we are going to scale through.

“By the time we now scale through, by the special grace of God, by September this year, we are going to ask those who are interested in our university to do Change of University, and admission will begin. That is the icing. And after that, recruitment of staff will just follow”.

The VC, who said that funding of education should not be left to the government alone, said, “Universities need a lot of funding. Funding is a major challenge. You have to provide facilities and all of those things.

“So, as I speak to you, we (FUTES) do not have enough funds. That’s why we keep appealing and going to people because the government cannot do it all alone. We have been visiting some people who are public-spirited, people who like education, tertiary education.

“If we have people who want to donate buildings, we are going to name such after them; people who want to give scholarships; people who want to build hostels in such a manner that it is their own and they will take rent and all of those things.

“I think the funding is crucial because if you look at the nature of our university, University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, it is capital-intensive, it is technology-based.

“It means we need a lot of equipment. As I said, the government cannot do everything. So we need help at this time financially,” the VC said.

Aribisala disclosed that the land issue, which could have been a challenge to the university, had been resolved amicably with an agreement made with the concerned families.

“As I speak to you now, it has been resolved. The 200 hectares that have been donated to the university are very intact.

“There has been an agreement. The community and government will also pay some compensation to the families.

“So they are now at peace. The community is not trying to force the land. I think that was the kind of misconception that happened at the time,” the Vice Chancellor said.

New Ekiti Varsity Set to Admit Students in September, Says VC Aribisala

The newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, is preparing to open its doors to pioneer students in September 2025, according to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Gbenga Aribisala. The VC made this announcement during a media briefing on Monday, where he outlined the institution’s vision and readiness to commence academic activities.

“Admission for the first academic calendar will begin in September this year in four different faculties – Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences; Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences; Faculty of Computer and Information Technology with courses like Mechatronics, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybercrime, Security and Information Technology,” Aribisala revealed.

The university, established on February 20, 2025, by the Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, aims to produce competent graduates equipped with innovative and problem-solving skills. The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the institution would not compromise on staff quality and would follow strict recruitment protocols.

“University is a community of scholars,” he stated. “The management will prioritise the recruitment of competent academic and non-academic staff who have a passion for academic research works that would win grants, attract global attention, be highly respectful, neat and always ready to assist students and anyone, when the need arises.”

Aribisala said the institution was fully aware of the need to maintain high standards from inception. “This school cannot employ or engage workers who would be idle or those who will bring the name of the school to disrepute. The university is to stand as a source of building human resources for the advancement of societal development,” he said.

According to the VC, all staff recruitment and administrative procedures would adhere strictly to the principles of federal character, ensuring fairness, diversity, and a high level of professionalism across all departments. “Advertisement and every process would be in line with the federal character principles to ensure that only staff members with a passion for excellence are engaged,” he added.

Aribisala also reiterated that research would be central to the university’s mission. “Research work would be prioritised to ensure that the university turns out students who will be job creators and not job seekers. We are passionate about building a university that is ICT driven, transparent and with integrity,” he noted.

While addressing questions on infrastructure readiness, the VC confirmed that the university’s digital platforms, including its official website, were in the final stages of development to facilitate access to admission and academic information. “Work is almost completed on the university’s website to ease access to relevant information concerning the institution,” he explained.

On amenities, Professor Aribisala disclosed that the institution had partnered with several organizations and individuals to provide basic infrastructure. “Measures have been put in place to ensure potable water and stable electricity supply across the university community through partnership with various groups, organisations and individuals, without relying solely on electricity distribution companies,” he stated.

Expressing appreciation to key stakeholders, Aribisala acknowledged the support of the host community and political leaders. “All the facilities that we are using now were donated by the community, and I sincerely appreciate our Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Adeola Ajakaye; and the good people of Iyin Ekiti for their sense of hospitality, which has made commencement of the academic programme easy,” he concluded.
