UMYU LAW CLINIC HOSTS INAUGURAL ENVIRONMENTAL AND SANITATION DAY

On Wednesday, August 31, 2025, the Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Law Clinic successfully held its inaugural Environmental and Sanitation Day, an impactful event aimed at raising awareness on environmental protection and sustainability, with a strong focus on legal and Islamic perspectives. The event was anchored by Maryam Rabe Mani, Director, Directorate of Human Rights, who served as Master of Ceremonies. Proceedings commenced with an opening prayer led by Abubakar Umar, the Attorney General of UMYU Faculty of Law, and Deputy Amir of NAMLAS, UMYU Chapter.

In his welcome address, the President of the Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), UMYU Chapter, Senator Abubakar Adamu Ɗanladi, emphasized the importance of environmental advocacy among young legal minds and reiterated the association's commitment to community-oriented initiatives.

A major highlight of the day was a powerful lecture delivered by Professor Binta Ɗalhat Ɗan Ali, who spoke extensively on “Islamic Perspectives on the Preservation of the Environment,” offering profound insights on climate issues from both religious and academic viewpoints. Following the lecture, the Law Clinic Coordinator, who also serves as the Faculty Examination Officer, Dr Ahmad Haruna Ɗanmaigauta, delivered an inspiring speech reaffirming the Clinic's role in community development and environmental sustainability. The Law Clinic subsequently presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Special Guest of Honour, Professor Binta Ɗalhat Ɗan Ali, which showed their wholesome appreciation of her efforts and commitment to a cleaner and safer environment.

A vibrant question and answer session allowed students and attendees to engage directly with the speakers, share thoughts, and seek clarifications on various environmental challenges and solutions. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Abdulmalik Mukhtar, the Director General and Chairman of the UMYU Law Clinic, who expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed the Clinic’s dedication to actionable environmental initiatives.

In a symbolic gesture of their commitment, the students proceeded to the Great Green Project Garden, where they planted economic trees and ornamental flowers across the Faculty, marking a meaningful end to the day’s activities and leaving a lasting environmental footprint. This event represents a significant step by the UMYU Law Clinic towards fostering environmental consciousness and legal activism among students and the wider community.

Sincerely,

Within the primary telos of law lies the provision of justice and the protection of rights. The law aims to provide justice and protect not only the rights of human beings but also those of animals. To fulfill these mandates, the Animal Welfare During Transportation Rules provide for the ventilation, rest, and humane handling of animals in transit. The provision aims to prevent cruelty and ensure fairness to animals.

The significance of justice in every society cannot be overemphasized, as far as both English and Islamic laws are concerned. This reminds us of what Sheikh Usmanu Ɗanfodiyo of blessed memory famously said: "A society can thrive with unbelief, but no society can thrive with injustice." Therefore, just as the law aims to protect human rights and ensure fairness, it does the same for animals.

Eschew cruelty to animals. Protect their rights, ensure fairness to them, and imbue humanity with justice!

Within the ambits of law lies the preservation of morality. To buttress this statement, the celebrated case of Queen v. Dudley and Stephen axiomatically showcases this, where the trial judge stated: "Though law and morality are not the same, and many things may be immoral which are not necessarily illegal, yet the absolute divorce of law from morality would be of fatal consequence."

Apropos of the above, some states consider public display of affection as indecent and consequently offensive, with perpetrators risking arrest.

Within the remit of the law lies the prevention and mitigation of abysmal conduct. To enforce this mandate, Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007 prescribes penalties ranging from a fifty-thousand-naira fine to six months’ imprisonment, or both, for abusing our Nigerian currency.

The law imposes these penalties without looking askance at the repercussions of the punishments. This law is perhaps presumed to also aid in preserving the purchasing power of the Nigerian Naira.

Obey the law, be reminded of what had been famously said by Lord Denning MR: "Be you never so high, the law is above you." Therefore, shun the violation of the law, eschew being penalized.

04/06/2025

Today, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, commemorates the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, a poignant reminder of the egregious impact of violence on the most vulnerable members of our society. This solemn occasion serves as a clarion call to raise awareness about the pernicious effects of aggression on children and to galvanize efforts to protect and support them. The United Nations observes this day to acknowledge the profound suffering of children in conflict zones and to exhort action to prevent violence against children.

The thematic foci of this day encompass raising awareness, safeguarding children from aggression, and providing succor to affected children who have endured physical, psychological, and emotional trauma. Notably, the United Nations has asserted commitments to upholding children's rights and promoting their well-being by observing this day, thereby underscoring the imperative of protecting the innocent and vulnerable.

However, a pertinent question arises: do these professed commitments translate into tangible actions? It behooves us to scrutinize the efficacy of these efforts and to hold accountable those responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
