Two researchers from the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, Dr Yikwab P. Yikwabs of the Department of Sociology and Mr Danjuma Saidu of the Universityโ€™s Library have advocated sustained efforts in caring for the victims of farmer-herder conflict in North Central Nigeria and resolving the indigene-settler challenges in the countryโ€™s Middle Belt.

The duo of Yikwabs and Saidu spoke at the African Universities Seminar Series (AUSS-NG) of the Social Science Research Council, New York, held at the University of Lagos. AUSS-NG is the forum of the SSRCโ€™s African Peacebuilding and Developmental Dynamics (APDD).

Both scholars have won the research grants of the APDD-SSRC at different stages for their doctoral programmes. While Dr Yikwabs won the Proposal stage grants of USD3,000 in 2021 and the research stage of USD15,000 in 2022, Mr. Saidu is a current doctoral research fellow who won the Proposal stage grants of USD3,000.

The event, which featured both current and alumni of the SSRCโ€™s APDD fellows, afforded Dr Yikwabs the opportunity to report his research findings on the victimhood of farmer-herder conflict in the North Central.

Presenting the paper titled "Coping Strategies Employed by Orphans and Widows from the Farmer-Herder Conflict in North Central Nigeria," Dr. Yikwabs brought evidence of children and women who became orphans and widows, respectively, as a result of farmer-herder conflict in Benue and Plateau States.

According to the sociologist, little has been done by the government and other stakeholders to help the victims of the quagmire.

โ€œThe institutional responses to this challenge of farmer-herder conflict have only offered immediate aid without addressing long-term needs such as education for orphans and livelihood restoration for the widows.

While advocating sustained interventions by the federal and state governments to rebuild livelihoods and ensure the safe return of those displaced, Yikwabs highlighted coping strategies employed by orphans and widows as a result of farmer-herder conflict in North Central, Nigeria.

Meanwhile, in his presentation titled "Who Owns the Land? Indigenous Knowledge, Information Politics and the Construction of Citizenship in Nigeriaโ€™s Middle Belt," Mr. Danjuma Saidu found that the lack of uniformly or generally agreed-upon institutional and communal memories has exacerbated the conflict of belonging and land ownership in the region.

He further explained that indigenous knowledge, particularly oral traditions, serves as an important information system through which communities preserve and transmit...

A 400-level student of the Department of Geology, Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Emmanuel Clinton Adeiza, and his teammates in Team SafeRetriev have won N2 million in the EdTech category of the Kogi Innovation Hub (KINHUB) Hackathon Challenge, emerging tops among five competing teams.

The team, which included students from Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), developed an innovative solution to address challenges associated with the access, preservation, and verification of academic credentials.

The hackathon brought together students from universities across Kogi State, including Federal University Lokoja, CUSTECH, Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), and Kogi State University (KSU), to compete in four innovation driven sectors: Education Technology (EdTech), Agriculture Technology (AgriTech), Health Technology (HealthTech), and Government Technology (GovTech).

Adeiza, a member of the winning team, was the sole representative of Federal University Lokoja on Team SafeRetriev. His achievement highlights the capacity of FUL students to contribute to interdisciplinary projects and develop practical solutions to challenges beyond the conventional boundaries of their academic disciplines.

The Department of Geology has expressed pride in Adeiza's accomplishment, describing it as a reflection of the creativity, adaptability, problem solving skills, and innovative spirit it seeks to cultivate among its students.
