MRTB VISITS KIU FOR ACCREDITATION OF PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT

The Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria (MRTB) has visited Kashim Ibrahim University (KIU) to assess and accredit the Department of Physiotherapy.

Speaking during the visit, the leader of the accreditation team, Professor Adamu Rufai, said the team was at the University on a national assignment to assess and accredit the Department of Physiotherapy.

Professor Rufai described accreditation as an important process in academic affairs, noting that its primary purpose is to ensure quality assurance and maintain the required standards in academic programmes in line with global best practices.

He stated that following the team’s assessment of the Department, including the classrooms, laboratories and offices, the facilities were found to be in good condition. He therefore commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babagana Gutti, and his management team for the work done in developing the Department.

Professor Rufai called on the Vice-Chancellor to continue giving adequate attention and support to the Department, noting that Physiotherapy is a professional programme that requires six years of training.

He also commended the Department for its proper record-keeping, particularly the maintenance of students’ and staff files, describing the practice as commendable.

The leader of the team further commended the Borno State Government for its excellent support to the education sector, particularly the ongoing development of the Robust Teaching Hospital, which he described as an important development that would further support medical education and training in the State.

The accreditation team expressed appreciation to the University management and the Department of Physiotherapy for their cooperation throughout the exercise.

In his respond the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babagana Gutti welcome the team led and his members to KIU and added that we are confident that this visit will further strengthen the Department of Physiotherapy and contribute to the continued growth and development of the university.

Professor Gutti said the management of the University has reaffirmed its strong commitment to providing adequate infrastructure, equipment and other facilities required to support quality medical education and ensure the successful accreditation of its programmes.

He further stated that the Teaching Hospital is being prepared for commissioning on 17 October, with comprehensive cleaning and other final preparations scheduled to commence immediately.

The VC explained that the University already has existing Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with teaching hospitals and specialist hospitals to support clinical training. However, the establishment and commissioning of the University’s own Teaching Hospital will further strengthen its capacity to provide practical training and support the expansion of its medical programmes Professor Gutti stated.

Professor Gutti also reaffirmed that the University has no intention of reducing student admission on account of facilities. Rather, the plan is to continuously expand infrastructure and equipment in line with the mandate to increase admission capacity.

It was disclosed that additional equipment purchased for the Teaching Hospital is still being unpacked and arranged. Management is also committed to procuring additional equipment where necessary to ensure that all departments meet the required standards.

The University has adequate space for further expansion, including additional buildings within the hospital complex. One of the buildings is earmarked to support postgraduate training and simulation activities in the future. The facility may also provide additional space for departments such as Physiotherapy as the University continues to expand its programmes.

KIU WELCOMES NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL OF NIGERIA FOR ACCREDITATION OF NURSING DEPARTMENT

Kashim Ibrahim University (KIU), has welcomed a delegation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for the accreditation assessment of the University’s Nursing Department.

Speaking during the accreditation exercise, the leader of the delegation, Dr. Amina Ahmed, said the team was at the University as part of its national assignment to assess the facilities, manpower, clinical training areas and other requirements for the Nursing programme.

Dr. Ahmed expressed appreciation to the University for its hospitality and cooperation throughout the exercise. She explained that members of the delegation, being trained nurses and representatives of the NMCN, were at the University to assess the Nursing Department and provide professional observations aimed at strengthening the programme.

“We have come to review what is on ground, identify areas that require attention and make recommendations where necessary. We have gone round the University and visited the various facilities and clinical sites. What we have seen is quite commendable, and there are a lot of things that the University has put in place,” she said.

She, however, encouraged the University management to give particular attention to some identified areas in order to further improve the Nursing programme, create a conducive environment for students and motivate members of staff to deliver their best.

The delegation also visited the clinical training areas, including the General Hospital and Yerwa Primary Health Care Centre. Dr. Ahmed noted that while there were manpower challenges in some clinical areas, the facilities visited demonstrated good potential for effective clinical training.

He assured the delegation that the University would immediately address the areas identified for improvement during the assessment.
“We have taken note of the areas that require attention, and I assure you that the identified issues will be addressed promptly. We are committed to continuous improvement, and we will do everything possible to ensure that our students receive quality education and professional training,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Professor Gutti also highlighted the University’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives, noting that KIU was committed to deploying technology to improve teaching, learning and administration.
He further disclosed that the Borno State Government’s Teaching Hospital would soon be commissioned, describing the facility as one of the major teaching hospitals in Nigeria.

According to him, the hospital would significantly enhance clinical training and further improve the quality and standard of medical education at the University.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the commitment of the University management to working closely with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and other relevant professional bodies to continuously improve the quality of training provided to students.

The accreditation exercise formed part of the University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its health sciences programmes and provide students with quality academic and clinical training.
