🚨🚨The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (FUNATO) has entered into a strategic collaboration with Maotronics Systems Limited to drive smart and sustainable agriculture.

The partnership will see the deployment of Maotronics’ IoT-based irrigation and water/energy management systems to boost efficiency and productivity.

Both institutions will begin with a pilot project on one hectare of open farmland before expanding to larger farms and greenhouses. The pilot will help assess performance, cost, and integration into FUNATO’s farm ecosystem.

Beyond technology deployment, the collaboration will also provide training and hands-on experience for FUNATO students and staff on modern agritech tools.

This initiative reinforces FUNATO’s drive toward innovation, research, and sustainable agriculture in Nigeria.

🚨🚨🚨FUNATO Plants 1,000 Trees, Distributes Locust Bean Seedlings on Historic Tree Planting Day

The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (FUNATO) hosted a successful Tree Planting Day attended by community leaders, chiefs, farmers, staff, students, and invited secondary schools.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. O. J. Babayemi said the initiative was inspired after a tree was cut down during work on the College of Engineering. To make up for it, the University has launched a programme to plant 1,000 replacement trees. He jokingly warned that anyone who fells a tree without permission will plant 1,000 trees.

Prof. Babayemi also outlined plans to support local farmers with more economic tree seedlings, fish fingerlings, and farm inputs. He commended Deacon S. A. Ipadeola for his role in establishing the University’s feed mill and fish pond, which support training and food production.

Over 1,000 locust bean seedlings were distributed to participants to plant across the community, as part of FUNATO’s drive to protect the environment and boost food security.

The event underscores FUNATO’s commitment to sustainability and agricultural development.

International Partnership Meeting Held with Terra Agric International

An international partnership meeting was held with Mr. Rene Haveman, Chief Executive Officer of Terra Agric International, Netherlands. The meeting was facilitated by Engr. Marcus Fabunmi and Dr. Nathaniel Tegbe.

Discussions focused on opportunities to improve the cultivation of high-quality crops and enhance value addition across Africa.
Key areas highlighted include the proposed establishment of a tractor assembly plant, which could reduce tractor costs from 8,000 for locally assembled units. Other areas of focus were rice production, in view of Nigeria’s high consumption, and opportunities for collaborative research.

Talks are ongoing, with optimism for a mutually beneficial partnership.

Led by Prof. Babarinde, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics presented freshly baked cassava biscuits to Management during an in-house meeting.

Three variants were showcased: 100% cassava flour [gluten-free], 80% wheat flour with 20% cassava flour, and 70% wheat flour with 30% cassava flour.
Management members sampled the products and provided honest feedback and suggestions. The feedback indicated that the department is making significant progress in the development of quality cassava-based products.

For many years, cassava farmers have faced the challenges of poor market access, post-harvest losses, and low demand, leading to reduced income despite their hard work. As wheat flour becomes increasingly expensive and less accessible, cassava is emerging as a viable local alternative for bread production, creating new opportunities to increase demand for cassava while enhancing food security and improving farmers' livelihoods.

In response to these challenges, the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (FUNATO), is transforming agricultural research into practical innovations that benefit farming communities. Led by Professor Kemi Babarinde and her team from the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, the University has successfully developed the FUNATO Cassava-Included Bread, demonstrating the potential of cassava flour in producing quality bread.

Working in collaboration with indigenous bakers, the research team translated scientific findings into market-ready products by producing bread with 15% and 10% cassava flour substitution. These formulations provide nutritious, affordable, and locally sourced bread while creating a sustainable market for cassava farmers. The team is also advancing research on gluten-free cassava bread to meet the needs of consumers with gluten intolerance and further expand the market for cassava-based products.

This innovation marks a significant milestone in FUNATO's commitment to solving real-world agricultural challenges through research and collaboration. By promoting cassava utilization in bread production, the University is helping to reduce post-harvest losses, increase farmers' incomes, strengthen food security, and position cassava as a key driver of Nigeria's agricultural and economic development.

The Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Okeho (FUNATO), through its College of Engineering and Technology (COLET), on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, hosted its College Innovation Challenge as part of its commitment to promoting innovative technological solutions for agricultural and national development. The competition featured 22 project teams comprising over 220 first-year students from seven academic departments, who demonstrated creativity, technical competence, and problem-solving skills through the presentation of functional prototypes and digital innovations.

Among the notable innovations showcased were a functional agricultural marketing website, "Connecting Okeho's Farmers to the World," accessible at https://okehofarmconnect.netlify.app/, alongside an automatic crop irrigation system, a smart waste disposal bin, a laser-based theft alarm system, an automatic doorbell alarm system, a solar-powered power bank, a prototype mini hydraulic crop harvester lift, a motorized vacuum cleaner, a model mini crane, a motorized load lifter, a hand glove illuminator, and an intelligent sensor system. These projects reflected the students' capacity to develop practical, technology-driven solutions to contemporary agricultural and societal challenges.
