"Staff Welfare Remains My Top Priority" — NOCEN Provost Assures as COEASU National Officers Pay Courtesy Visit

The Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), Engr. Prof. Victor Ifeanyi Obiora Ndirika, has reaffirmed that staff welfare remains the foremost priority of his administration. He made the declaration while receiving the National General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Comrade Dr. Churchill C. Okonkwo, and his delegation on a courtesy and congratulatory visit to the College on Tuesday, 7 July 2026.

The visit, which preceded the COEASU NOCEN Extraordinary Chapter Executive Council Meeting, provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss issues relating to institutional development, industrial harmony, and the welfare of academic staff.

Speaking during the visit, the COEASU National General Secretary, Comrade Dr. Churchill C. Okonkwo, stressed the need to strengthen collaboration between the College Management and the Union in order to foster a harmonious working environment and advance the welfare of academic staff. He appreciated the Provost for granting the Union audience and commended his inclusive leadership style, union-friendly disposition, and commitment to fairness since assuming office.

Dr. Okonkwo also lauded the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for his remarkable infrastructural interventions in the College, describing them as a significant contribution to the institution’s growth and development.

In his remarks, the COEASU South East Coordinator, Comrade Osmond S. Oboke, emphasized the importance of a cordial and collaborative working relationship between the College Management and COEASU. He noted that such synergy is essential for enhancing productivity, promoting efficient service delivery, and driving the sustained growth of the institution.

Responding, the Provost, Engr. Prof. Victor Ifeanyi Obiora Ndirika, expressed delight at receiving the COEASU delegation, particularly the National General Secretary, Comrade Dr. Churchill C. Okonkwo, and the COEASU South-East Coordinator, Comrade Osmond S. Oboke. He said his extensive experience serving in different capacities across several Nigerian universities has equipped him with a deep understanding of the needs, aspirations, and challenges of staff in tertiary institutions.

Prof. Ndirika reiterated his administration’s commitment to staff development through sustained support for participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, and other capacity-building programmes. He noted that such engagements enhance policy implementation, improve service delivery, encourage innovation, strengthen professional networks, and expose staff to global best practices.

FIVE OUTSTANDING FEMALE LECTURERS OF NOCEN SHINE AT AFRICAN FORUM FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHERS AND NATIONAL WOMEN IN EDUCATION AND RESEARCH AWARDS

Five distinguished female lecturers of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), have brought honour and prestige to the institution after emerging among the outstanding participants at the African Forum for Innovative Teachers (AFfIT) and National Women in Education and Research Awards, held on 10th July, 2026, at the Federal College of Education, Zuba, Abuja.

The prestigious programme, organised by the African Forum for Innovative Teachers (AFfIT) in collaboration with the Stand Tall African Initiative, attracted over 300 female academics from more than 60 Colleges of Education across Nigeria, celebrating excellence in research, innovation, educational leadership, and academic contributions.

The five lecturers nominated by the Management of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe to represent the College were:

- Dr. Chinyere Agnes Muokwue – Principal Lecturer, Department of Educational Psychology.
- Dr. Joy Amaka Ezidimma – Chief Lecturer, Department of Economics.
- Dr. Chinwe Mikella Nebolisa – Senior Lecturer, Department of Business Education.
- Dr. Anuli Iruoma Aguiyi – Chief Lecturer, Department of Linguistics, Igbo and Other Nigerian Languages.
- Dr. Chika Menkiti – Principal Lecturer, Department of Mathematics.

Following a rigorous selection process involving online interviews, research presentations, submission of scholarly publications, and comprehensive academic evaluations, Dr. Anuli Iruoma Aguiyi and Dr. Chinwe Mikella Nebolisa distinguished themselves through their outstanding research contributions, innovation, and commitment to educational advancement. Both scholars emerged as award recipients and received cash prizes of ₦100,000 each.

The event also featured several remarkable milestones for the NOCEN delegation, including:

- Their induction as Research Fellows of the African Forum for Innovative Teachers by the Governing Board of the Stand Tall African Initiative and the Management of the AFfIT Research Community.
- Their appointment as Pioneer Committee Members of the African Women in Research, Education and Leadership Advancement Project (AWIRELAP), with official appointment letters presented during the ceremony.
- Presentation of congratulatory letters in recognition of their induction as AFfIT Research Fellows.
- Conferment of the National Women in Education and Research Award on all five lecturers.
- Invitation to submit research proposals under the AFfIT Research Mini Grant Scheme, alongside several other research and leadership development opportunities.

NOCEN SWEARS IN FIRST FEMALE SUG PRESIDENT AS PROVOST CHARGES STUDENT LEADERS ON RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP

The Management of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), on Friday, 10th July 2026, officially inaugurated the newly elected Students’ Union Government (SUG) Executive Council at the College Council Chamber. The event marked the commencement of a new era of student leadership and democratic governance in the institution.

The historic inauguration produced the College’s first female Students’ Union Government President, Miss Patricia Adachukwu Ewulum, who took the oath of office alongside other members of the Executive Council before a distinguished gathering of College Management, Principal Officers, staff, students, security personnel, and invited guests.

Presenting the report of the electoral process, the Chairman of the SUG Electoral Committee, Dr. Law Egbomuche-Okeke, Esq., Ph.D., described the election as one of the most transparent, peaceful, and credible in the history of the College. He stated that the committee worked diligently for two weeks to deliver a free, fair, and violence-free election that produced competent and worthy student leaders.

The Oath of Office was administered by the College Litigation Officer, Barrister Onyebuchi Agbo. In her acceptance speech, the newly elected SUG President pledged to uphold the Constitution of the Students’ Union Government, discharge her duties with integrity, promote the unity and welfare of students, maintain confidentiality where necessary, and serve the student body with dedication and selflessness throughout her tenure.

Formally presenting the newly inaugurated Executive Council to the Provost, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ndu Azubuike, expressed appreciation to the College Management for providing an enabling environment that ensured the successful conduct of the election.

He described the Provost, Engr. Prof. Victor I.O. Ndirika, FNIAE, as a student-friendly administrator whose unwavering commitment to democratic governance, students’ welfare, and institutional development has continued to strengthen cordial relations between the College Management and the student body. He expressed confidence that the new SUG leadership would work harmoniously with Management to promote peace, unity, and sustainable development.

In his address, the Provost, Engr. Prof. Victor I.O. Ndirika, FNIAE, expressed profound gratitude to Almighty God for the peaceful and successful conduct of the election. He described the exercise as free, fair, transparent, and devoid of violence, and commended all stakeholders for their contributions to its success.

The Provost particularly applauded the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ndu Azubuike, for his exemplary leadership throughout the electoral process. He also commended the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Dr. Law Egbomuche-Okeke, for his wealth of experience, wisdom, and integrity in conducting a transparent election. He equally appreciated every member of the Electoral Committee for their professionalism and dedication, while acknowledging the contributions of the immediate past SUG Executive Council.

Addressing the newly inaugurated student leaders, Prof. Ndirika reminded them that leadership begins with opportunities such as student union service. Drawing from his own experiences as a secondary school prefect and later President of the Engineering Students’ Association, he encouraged them to view their current positions as stepping stones to greater responsibilities in public service. He noted that today’s student leaders could become tomorrow’s commissioners, ministers, governors, or even President of Nigeria.

The Provost reaffirmed his administration’s open-door policy and encouraged the SUG leadership to sustain constructive engagement with College Management. He urged them to channel students’ grievances through dialogue rather than protests or strikes, assuring them that Management remains committed to addressing genuine concerns.

Describing students as the heartbeat of every tertiary institution, Prof. Ndirika assured the union that students’ welfare would continue to receive priority attention. He emphasized that providing a conducive teaching and learning environment remains central to the College’s vision of producing globally competitive graduates and worthy ambassadors of NOCEN.

He further called for improved environmental sanitation and discipline across the campus, discouraging the indiscriminate disposal of refuse, particularly sachet water wrappers. He condemned the practice of hawking goods inside lecture halls and stressed that commercial activities should be confined to designated areas to preserve the sanctity of the academic environment.

As part of efforts to strengthen institutional discipline, the Provost reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat cultism, corruption, examination malpractice, and all forms of unethical conduct. He disclosed plans to introduce confidential suggestion boxes through which students could anonymously report misconduct, assuring prompt investigation and appropriate action.

He appealed to the new SUG Executive Council to partner with Management in identifying criminal elements and eliminating cult-related activities on campus in order to sustain a peaceful, secure, and conducive learning environment.

On financial accountability, Prof. Ndirika assured students that all funds paid into official College accounts would be managed transparently and utilized strictly for approved purposes. He advised the SUG leadership to manage the Union’s resources prudently, reminding them that leadership is a sacred trust that demands honesty, accountability, and responsible stewardship.

In his concluding remarks, the Provost reminded the newly inaugurated officers that the oath they had taken represented a solemn commitment to integrity and selfless service. He urged them to remain faithful to that oath and prayed for God’s wisdom, guidance, and blessings upon the new administration.

In her vote of thanks, the newly inaugurated SUG President, Miss Patricia Adachukwu Ewulum, thanked Almighty God for the successful inauguration. She expressed profound appreciation to the Provost, College Management, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Electoral Committee, security personnel, and the entire student community for ensuring a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process.

PROF. NDIRIKA PAYS WORKING VISIT TO NOCEN DEMONSTRATION SCHOOLS IN AWKA

The Provost of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), Prof. Victor Ifeanyi Obiora Ndirika, on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, paid a working visit to the College Demonstration Schools in Awka, comprising the Demonstration Secondary School and the Demonstration Primary School.

The visit formed part of the College Management’s ongoing efforts to assess the state of teaching and learning, inspect available facilities, evaluate infrastructure, and engage with staff on matters relating to their welfare and the overall development of the schools.

Addressing members of staff during the visit, Prof. Ndirika reaffirmed Management’s commitment to improving the physical infrastructure of the schools while prioritising the welfare and professional well-being of staff.

He stated: “I am here to appreciate your commitment and invaluable contributions to the training of the next generation of leaders and scholars. I also want to understand your welfare needs and the challenges confronting you, so that together we can build stronger and more effective demonstration schools.”

The Provost further encouraged the staff to remain dedicated to their responsibilities by sustaining high academic standards, promoting discipline, and fostering excellence in teaching and learning. He stressed that quality education remains the foundation for human capital development and sustainable national progress.

Responding on behalf of the staff of Demonstration Secondary School, the Principal, Mr. Gabinus Ukah, expressed profound appreciation to the Provost for the historic visit, describing it as a morale booster and a clear demonstration of Management’s concern for the growth and advancement of the demonstration schools.

Similarly, the Headmistress of Demonstration Primary School, Mrs. Ijeoma Nnagbo, who was represented by Mrs. Obiageli Okwuanaso, thanked the Provost for identifying with the staff and pledged their continued commitment to delivering quality education and supporting the vision of the College Management.

NOCEN Organises Teaching Practice Supervisors’ Workshop to Strengthen Quality Teacher Preparation

Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN) held a Teaching Practice Supervisors’ Workshop on Wednesday July 1, 2026. The exercise which was aimed at enhancing the capacity of lecturers and supervisors ahead of the 2026 Teaching Practice Exercise, had in attendance participants from the College Management, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, lecturers, Teaching Practice supervisors, and resource persons.

Declaring the workshop open on behalf of the Provost, Engr. Prof. Victor I.O. Ndirika, FNIAE, the Dean of General Education, Dr. Ifeoma C. Orakwue, underscored the central importance of teaching practice in teacher education. She noted that the exercise offers student-teachers the opportunity to translate theoretical knowledge into real classroom situations while developing key professional competencies such as lesson planning, classroom management, effective communication, learner assessment, and professional ethics.

Dr. Orakwue charged supervisors to discharge their duties with diligence, fairness, and professionalism, and to provide constructive feedback that will help student-teachers grow into competent and reflective educators.

The workshop featured three insightful presentations by distinguished resource persons:

Dr. Chinyere Nwaka presented on “Critical Analysis of the Teaching Practice Evaluation Instrument with Special Emphasis on Clinical Supervision." She clarified the proper use of the NCCE Teaching Practice Assessment Instrument and emphasised the value of clinical supervision and post-observation conferences.

Mr. Ibeto Michael spoke on “Relevant Teaching Skills as Instruments for Effective Teaching Practice.” He highlighted the importance of effective lesson planning, classroom management, appropriate teaching methods, and the formulation of measurable instructional objectives.

Dr. Amaechi Makasi delivered a lecture titled “Cooperating Schools as Co-Educators: Analysing Expectations for Successful Teaching Practice.” He stressed the need for strong collaboration among the College, cooperating schools, supervising lecturers, mentor teachers, and student teachers.

The presentations were followed by lively interactive sessions where participants asked questions, shared experiences, and received practical guidance on supervision, assessment, and professional conduct.

Participants described the workshop as timely, informative, and highly impactful. They expressed confidence that the insights gained would significantly improve the quality of teaching practice supervision and contribute to producing competent, reflective, and professionally responsible teachers.

The workshop ended with a renewed commitment by all participants to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and excellence during the upcoming Teaching Practice Exercise.

Mrs. Chika Chinemerem is a distinguished librarian, information scientist, researcher, and academic administrator with a wealth of experience in library and information services. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Ibadan, a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, and recently completed her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Library and Information Science at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

As the Acting College Librarian of Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, she provides strategic leadership in library administration, information resource management, collection development, user services, and the advancement of academic excellence through effective and innovative library services.

Mrs. Chinemerem is deeply committed to the promotion of librarianship, information literacy, educational development, and a vibrant reading culture. She is particularly interested in the integration of emerging technologies into l toibrary operations and services.

Her professional and research interests encompass digital librarianship, library management, knowledge management, information organization, user education, and contemporary issues in library and information science.

A dedicated scholar and lifelong learner, she has actively participated in numerous academic and professional development programmes. Through research, mentorship, and community engagement, she continues to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the library profession.

Mr. Gerald Nwachukwu Anigbogu is a seasoned accounting professional with over twelve (12) years of cognate experience, distinguished by excellence, integrity, transparency, accountability, and dedicated service.

He holds both a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Accountancy from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He is currently awaiting the Viva Voce (Final Defence) of his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) dissertation in the Department of Accountancy at the same institution.

A Chartered Accountant and member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Mr. Anigbogu has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to professional excellence, ethical practice, and continuous development within the accounting profession.
