In a Ph.D. thesis defense, the questions are typically designed to test your depth of knowledge, your understanding of your research, and how well you can justify your choices.

1. General Research Background

These questions check if you truly understand the field in which your research is situated.

Why did you choose this research topic?

What motivated you to conduct this study?

How does your research fit into the existing body of literature?

What gap in knowledge does your research address?

Can you briefly summarize your thesis in 3–5 minutes?

How is your study relevant to current trends or societal needs?
2. Research Problem & Objectives

These questions focus on clarity and justification.

What is the main research problem you are trying to solve?

How did you define your research objectives?

Were your research questions/hypotheses influenced by any specific theory or framework?

How did you ensure your research objectives are achievable and measurable?

How do your objectives link to your methodology?
3. Literature Review

They want to see if you understand the foundation of your work.

Which are the most influential studies that guided your research?

How does your study differ from previous similar studies?

Were there conflicting findings in literature? How did you address them?

Which theories or models underpin your research?
4. Methodology

This is the most frequently tested area — they check if your methods are valid and defendable.

Why did you choose this methodology over others?

How did you ensure reliability and validity in your data collection?

What sampling technique did you use and why?

Were there any limitations to your chosen method?

How did you deal with bias in your research?

Could your research be replicated by others? How?
5. Data Collection & Analysis

How did you collect your data, and why did you choose this approach?

What tools, instruments, or software did you use for analysis?

How did you handle missing or inconsistent data?

Were there any unexpected results in your analysis?

How did you interpret the statistical or qualitative results?
6. Findings & Discussion

What are the key findings of your research?

Were there any surprises in your results?

How do your results compare with existing studies?

Can you explain one key finding in simple layman’s terms?

How do your results answer your research questions?

Do your findings have any broader implications beyond your study?
7. Contribution to Knowledge

What is the novel contribution of your thesis?

How will your research benefit the field or society?

Does your work open new areas for future research?

Can your model/theory/methodology be applied in other contexts?
8. Limitations & Challenges

What are the main limitations of your research?

If you were to redo this research, what would you change?

What challenges did you face during the research, and how did you overcome them?

Could these limitations have affected your findings?

The spotlight is on Uforo Joshua Udosen, a devoted theologian and rising academic, who has just successfully defended his thesis at Imo State University. With a passion rooted in both scripture and service, Udosen’s research marks a significant contribution to African biblical scholarship.

His thesis, titled “An Exegetical Study of 1 Corinthians 7:1–11: Implications for Singles and Couples in Ikot Ndien, Akwa Ibom State,” stands out for its depth of scholarship and contextual relevance. Through meticulous exegesis, Udosen engages critically with the historical and cultural background of Paul's teachings, offering a nuanced interpretation of the apostle’s perspectives on marriage and singleness.

What sets this work apart is its contextual application—bridging the ancient text with the lived realities of the Ikot Ndien community in Akwa Ibom State. In doing so, Udosen addresses contemporary relational and ethical questions, grounding them in theological insight that is both locally resonant and pastorally useful. His study not only enriches the discourse on New Testament ethics in non-Western settings but also provides a valuable resource for community education and pastoral engagement across Africa.

This is more than a scholarly milestone; it is a voice rising from the continent, speaking into its own context with clarity, relevance, and academic excellence.
