Next project from Home for the Youth Studio, done by Sena Berfin Ozbey. Due to the growing shortage of housing, homelessness problems are expected to increase even further in the future. In this project we collaborate with Woonstad Rotterdam (housing association) to provide liveable spaces to these youngsters. The organization offers one of their existing buildings to be transformed into a social hub.
The project aims to provide opportunities to the youth who want to start a new life. It’s aim is to discover the ways to strengthen the social relationship with the project, not only at the building level, but in a wider scale. In this regard, the idea of Jan Gehl was considered as an inspiration. He states that “First life, then spaces, then buildings – the other way around never works”. To achieve this, it is suggested to define a social concept and urban strategies while collaborating with the partners and youngsters as users in the preparation phase. In addition, these strategies are in search of possible job opportunities for the youngsters in order to prepare them to their professional working life.
The whole process is considered as circular, all steps are related and supportive to each other. After the preparation phase, to create a life in the building, youngsters are welcome to start their life here. After this step, the existing space quality is improved. On ground level, the idea is to create a culture hub which works together with the cultural organizations in the neighborhood. In order to strengthen the connection between the park and the building, the passage is created in the middle of the building. Besides these interventions, the support center is designed for mentorship programs when it is needed. The mentorship program is supported by the cultural activities and commercial spaces which provide job opportunities for the youngsters.
To create more housing units, the unused existing terraces are designed with a tiny village atmosphere.
