Contribution of climatic changes in mean and variability to monthly temperature and precipitation extremes

Richard Bintanja probably thought it would be a good way to start the new year with a new Nature publication!

Check out the article in Nature Communications Earth & Environment: Global changes in extreme weather attributed to climate change and climate variability.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-020-00077-4

https://www.rug.nl/news/2021/01/global-changes-in-extreme-weather-attributed-to-climate-change-and-climate-variability

Changes in monthly temperature extremes are governed by mean climate warming, whereas changes in monthly precipitation extremes respond more to changes in variability, suggest analyses of large-ensemble climate simulations.

The Arctic climate is changing faster than other parts of the world owing mainly to regional feedbacks, which may modulate the local-scale response relevant for birds. Within this project, we will identify, quantify and study the mechanisms behind changes in regional climate variability (including migration routes) relevant for (future) bird behaviour (migration routing, breeding sites, range changes, food availability).

Climate affects changes in energy demand (e.g. winter heating, summer cooling, isolation techniques) and with the emergence of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, bioenergy, hydro) also increasingly decentralised energy production. This suggests that balancing energy production and demand will become increasingly complex, in particular under extreme (and coincident) climate conditions.

Within this project, we aim to address this complex, multidisciplinary issue by combining state-of-the-art climate models assessing future changes in climate variability/extremes with sophisticated energy production/demand models. It will bring together specialists in climate change, variability and extremes (ESRIG/Ocean Ecosystems, KNMI), energy research, water energy links (ESRIG/IREES), and energy transport/security (Vattenfall).

The positions are part of the newly established and DFG-funded Research Training Group โ€œBiota-Mediated Effects on
Carbon Cycling in Estuariesโ€ (RTG 2530, BiCEst).

The mission of BiCEst is to fill existing knowledge gaps on biota-mediated effects on estuarine carbon (C) cycling under current conditions and with respect to global change scenarios. BiCEst will address effects of plants, algae, microbes, animals as well as their interactions on estuarine C cycling both in intertidal marshes and in subtidal channels. The major study area will be the Elbe estuary in Northern Germany.

The positions are expected to start on 1 January 2021 and will run for three years.

Looking for mercury in the Arctic

Around the globe, coal-fired power stations, metal foundries and small-scale gold mining are responsible for the emission of the heavy metal mercury. In the Arctic, thousands of kilometres away from the source of the emissions, the mercury is causing a lot of damage to people, animals and the environment. Frits Steenhuisen, researcher at the Arctic Centre of the RUG, but also PhD student at our department, was interviewed about his work. He is trying to unveil not only the amount of mercury emitted but also the sources of the emissions.

In februari organiseren we een heleboel interessante lezingen, soms met rondleiding of heuse workshop (Lezing + Workshop | Spitsbergse Muts). Our lunch lectures (on 19 en 26 februari) are completely free of charge (the one on 26/02 is in English). Voor de andere twee lezingen is een geldig entreebewijs voor ons museum voldoende.

* 09/02 | 12:30-13:30: lezing/rondleiding met expeditieleider Louwrens Hacquebord van de Spitsbergen 79 expeditie.

* 19/02 | 12:00-13:00: lunchlezing door Maria van Leeuwe, algenonderzoeker en deelnemer aan de MOSAiC-expeditie, waarbij een onderzoeksschip ingevroren ligt in de noordpool.

* 21/02 | 13.00 - 15.00: Lezing + Workshop | Spitsbergse Muts Aanmelden via [email protected] (15 euro p.p.)

* 22/02 | 13:00-14:00: familielezing Maarten Loonen, poolwetenschapper, over de dieren (ijsberen, walrussen en vele vogels) op Spitsbergen en wat de klimaatverandering betekent voor de natuur.

* 26/02 | 12:00-13:00: lunch lecture by scientist Harro Meijer on climate change. What is it scientifically speaking? It's more or less a 'fact check' on climate change
