We're excited to cooperate with Japan's National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU) on a new book series: NIHU Studies in the Humanities. The new series will showcase monographs and edited volumes resulting from research projects conducted by Japanese and international scholars affiliated with one of NIHU’s six institutes. In order to ensure that volumes in the series reach the widest possible audience, including in developing countries, NIHU will sponsor their publication in Open Access.

“Brill is honored that NIHU has chosen it as its publishing partner”, says Maurits van den Boogert, Chief Publishing Officer at Brill. “NIHU is one of Asia’s premier research organizations, so research results published in the series will present cutting-edge scholarship which will doubtless make a significant contribution to the study of the humanities worldwide.”

New! 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝘿𝙖𝙤𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙄𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙡 is a Daoist-infused tour de force on the Daoist mountain hermit Chén Tuán 陳摶 (Xīyí 希夷 [Infinitesimal Subtlety]; d. 989) and his fellow “hidden immortals.”
Breaking various academic taboos, including hyper-historicism, social constructivism, and conformist mentalities, here Komjathy, in an aspirational gesture towards unbridled inquiry, offers annotated translations and scholarly introductions to ten major works associated with the Daoist immortal.

Faces of God
Images of Devotion in Indo-Muslim Painting, 1500-1800

In a podcast with Raj Balkaran for New Books Network, Murad Khan Mumtaz discusses his latest book 'Faces of God'. In the book, he argues that Islamic art is often misrepresented as an iconophobic tradition. As a result of this assumption, the polyvalence of figural artworks made for South Asian Muslim audiences has remained hidden in plain view.

'Faces of God' situates manuscript illustrations and album paintings within cultures of devotion and ritual shaped by Islamic intellectual and religious histories. Central to this story are the Mughal siblings, Jahanara Begum and Dara Shikoh, and their Sufi guide Mulla Shah. Through detailed art historical analysis supported by new translations, this study contextualizes artworks made for Indo-Muslim patrons by putting them into direct dialogue with written testimonies.
