Yesterday, Nava Tintarev (front and center) formally introduced herself as full professor of Explainable Artificial Intelligence with her inaugural lecture "Whom are you explaining to, and why?". You can still rewatch the livestream to hear her inspiring lecture about why it's important that us humans can understand AI models in a useful way, and how we should go about that!

“Five years from now I see myself working on brain computer interfaces”, says Tim Dick, master’s student of Data Science for Decision Making at Maastricht University.

“I have a background in psychology and neuroscience. It would be inspiring to help disabled people restore some of their normal life with the help of computers. In particular, people who cannot control their limbs anymore due to paralysis can benefit from brain computer interfaces that read people’s mind directly.”

For now, Tim is working hard at, for example, student projects. “We do lots of brain storming, code writing or setting up math to develop an algorithm or an app.”

Are data science students aware of the intricacies of cybercrime and cybersecurity? And do they know about GDPR and IP?

Prof. Frank Thuijsman of the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences, invited Sylvia Laurensse and Bart Pepels (Police Limburg), as well as Serge Blommendaal (Rutten x Welling Lawyers) to inform first year Data Science and Artificial Intelligence students about the threshold between legal and illegal activities. In two separate lectures many cases were discussed in a lively manner.

Combining artificial intelligence with space? Definitely possible. AI student Meike Thijsen’s ultimate goal is working at the European Space Agency (ESA).

Meike completed her bachelor in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at UM, and is now following it up with the UM master’s programme in AI: “I am more interested in AI as I prefer programming over the mathematical part”. “I am not certain if I will be [at ESA] in 5 years, we will see. Because I am not sure whether I want to start working yet, I might do a second master's degree.”

“Companies and research groups ask for specialists in the emerging field of quantum computing”, says programme director Matúš Mihalák about the new specialisation in Quantum Computing at Maastricht University.

The specialisation will introduce master’s students to realistic as well as theoretical possibilities of quantum computers so they can design algorithms for these computers as soon as they become available.

As of next academic year, Maastricht University will be the first Dutch university to offer a specialisation in Quantum Computing as part of master’s programmes in Data Science for Decision Making and Artificial Intelligence.

“I believe the project-based mind-set we acquired, prepared us well to work in a team with different backgrounds and skill sets. Those skills help us to reach common goals“, says Taghi, who obtained his bachelor's degree (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) as well as his master's degree (Data Science and Decision Making) at Maastricht University.

“My time at the university opened my eyes towards the endless possibilities and opportunities machine learning and artificial intelligence can provide in today's world, as I applied and worked on projects ranging from medical research and satellite image analysis to anomaly detection and now towards language and text analysis.” Taghi works as a data scientist at Bol.com, one of the largest retail platforms in the Netherlands and Belgium.

“I am currently developing a new Machine Learning solution to automate Tax Rate Determination for all the products we sell.”

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) has again been rated as the best Artificial Intelligence bachelor’s programme in the Netherlands in the Keuzegids 2023!

The Keuzegids is a consumer guide for prospective students orienting on an undergraduate programme. The rankings are important to us, because its evaluations are based on the feedback of our students in the National Student Survey.

A big thank you to our staff members for their hard work in making DSAI the best AI programme, and to our students for filling out the National Student Survey!

𝗞𝗲𝘂𝘇𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗦𝗘 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻!

- Maastricht Science Programme, Circular Engineering, and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence are first in their respective categories;

- Circular Engineering, one of FSE’s newest programmes, already received the ‘top programme’ label!
