✨MEET OUT ALUMNA✨

"Positive change starts with you"

Gawithrie Vaanholt has a deep appreciation for the warm welcome and the many opportunities she has received after arriving in the Netherlands as an asylum seeker. As a result, she is naturally inclined to help those less fortunate. This ranges from supporting an orphanage in her birth country Sri Lanka to various initiatives on the Island of Bali and her involvement with Stichting Rotterdam Mooier maken. After a successful career with Euronext, she realised that philanthropy was something she could do professionally. And because it is her passion, it doesn't feel like work.

Returns go forward: using operations research to reduce transports in e-commerce 🚐🛍

Online retailers face a major challenge: high return rates, leading to costly logistics and environmental impact. In the Netherlands alone, 23 million packages were returned in 2020, with women’s fashion returns reaching up to 40.6% of sales. To tackle this, our team proposed and optimised an innovative customer-to-customer (C2C) return system, where returned items go directly from the old buyer to new buyers at a discount. Advanced mathematical modelling and real-world data demonstrate that this concept can increase profits by up to 34% and reduce warehouse workload.

Hundreds of pupils take part in lesson series during Erasmus Junior College.

On 7 October 2025, the Woudestein campus of Erasmus University Rotterdam was buzzing with curiosity and talent. During a special series of lessons organised by the Erasmus Junior College, hundreds of primary school pupils from advanced classes immersed themselves in the world of real scientific research.

The day began on a festive note with a warm welcome from Professor Philip Hans Franses of Erasmus School of Economics, who appeared in full academic gown for the occasion. Under the guidance of specially trained student teachers, the children then got to work as young researchers themselves.

In the ‘Economics’ module, pupils learned how to design and market their own product. Using the marketing mix (price, place, product and promotion) they discovered the importance of identifying a clear target audience. During an interactive quiz, they discussed the difference between price and value, and determined the worth of each other’s self-created products.

Finally, the pupils were introduced to the basics of statistics. They organised their research data into clear bar charts and presented their findings to the class, just like real scientists!

Honderden leerlingen volgen lessenserie tijdens Erasmus Junior College.

What if artificial intelligence could predict the stock market with complete accuracy, would it guarantee wealth?

Professor Patrick Verwijmeren discusses how AI collects information, identifies patterns and why human judgment continues to play a vital role. Even with advanced technology, the stock market remains uncertain. This question is addressed in the summer podcast series of Universiteit van Nederland in collaboration with Het Financieele Dagblad.

Find out more:

The stock market, of course, revolves around information. Do you know a little ahead of everyone else that a stock is going to rise?
