🏛️ Documenting the Old City of Nablus with VR, 3D scanning and AI

From 6 to 8 October, An-Najah National University hosted the first technical training workshop of the FORWARD project: “Digital Documentation, AI and Immersive Storytelling for Urban Resilience” 🇪🇺
Twelve participants, mostly architectural engineering students, worked in groups on campus. Dr. Ramzi Hassan (VR Lab, NMBU) designed and delivered the training online, while Prof. Allam Mousa facilitated on site and Dr. Zahraa Zawawi opened the workshop.

📸 Day 1 – Reality capture
Scanning campus buildings with the XGRIDS PortalCam (AI-powered 3D Gaussian Splatting) and the Polycam app.

🥽 Day 2 – Immersive storytelling
Recording 360° photos and videos, building simple virtual tours and exploring them in VR headsets.

🤖 Day 3 – AI and heritage
AI-assisted historical reconstruction, and why documented evidence must stay separate from speculation. The day included guest talks by architect Naseer Arafat on the Old City of Nablus, Abdulrahman Alkhateeb on telling Palestine’s stories with AI, and Paolo Tosolini on capturing Gaussian Splatting models.

📢 У V.N. Forward - Urban Resilience & Open Science in War Regions!

📢 FORWARD Stakeholders' Workshop 2: Turning Ground Truth into Training Content— Recap
On 24 September, we brought together academic, institutional, and civil society partners from Palestine and Ukraine for a focused online working session — examining real, on-the-ground conditions to directly shape our upcoming training modules on urban resilience.
The day centred on two real "Anchor Cases": the Gaza Urban Resilience Living Lab, a coastal corridor spanning Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, and Ukraine's winter 2026 blackouts, which left over 1,100 buildings in Kyiv without restored heating and cut power to 80% of Kharkiv in –14°C conditions.
From Gaza: current shelter conditions do not meet people's basic living needs, nor do they hold up through summer or winter — the clear message was: move from emergency response to real recovery. One Gaza Municipality representative put it plainly — research only has value once it becomes a practical, usable tool. With central water infrastructure destroyed, communities are surviving on unregulated wells and small-scale desalination, risking long-term damage to the region's only aquifer.
From Ukraine: participants pushed back on the word "blackout" itself, arguing wartime power disruptions are better understood as temporary restrictions — a mindset shift toward building systems that adapt and keep functioning, not just get repaired.
Thank you to everyone who joined and shared their expertise. This is exactly the kind of grounded, honest input that makes FORWARD's training programme genuinely useful.

We were pleased that our partners in Gaza have participated in the Gender, Work & Organization International Conference 2026 https://event.fourwaves.com/gwo2026 and contributed to a panel discussion featuring Palestinian women academics from Gaza.

The session titled “Knowledge, Care and Survival Under War: Gaza Special Session” brought together scholars from different universities in Gaza and shared their research, experiences, and reflections on knowledge production, care, displacement, resilience, and survival under war.

Our team presented the importance of the FORWARD project. At its core, FORWARD seeks to strengthen the inclusion, visibility, and participation of underrepresented voices in research and higher education. The discussions during the panel highlighted why such efforts matter: ensuring that those directly experiencing conflict are not only subjects of research but active contributors to knowledge creation, dialogue, and decision-making.

Honored to present FORWARD at Forskerforbundet’s May 1st breakfast in Oslo as part of this year’s theme, Academia at War. On International Workers’ Day, it was meaningful to introduce FORWARD as a project rooted in solidarity with higher education communities in Palestine and Ukraine, and committed to supporting academic resilience under conditions of war.
FORWARD was presented as a response to the urgent need to protect learning, research, and academic continuity in war-affected settings. Grounded in the realities of war, displacement, and educational disruption, the project highlights the importance of sustaining higher education not only as an institution, but as a space for dignity, knowledge, and collective resilience.
Grateful to Forskerforbundet and Scholars at Risk for creating space for this timely conversation and for recognizing that defending academia is inseparable from defending justice, labour, and human dignity.

Про це та інше йшлося в межах міжнародного проєкту “FORWARD — Urban Resilience through Open Science, Education, and Community Engagement in War Regions” 🙌🏻

Erasmus+ 💙
