Coastal Marine Group, University of Waikato

Coastal Marine Group, University of Waikato The Coastal Marine Group has been pushing back the frontiers of coastal research and teaching in New Zealand since 1993.

The Coastal Marine Group is based in Hamilton and the field station in Tauranga. We were established by the late Terry Healy in 1993, with help from Willem de Lange and others. We train students at all levels, and conduct research in coastal processes, marine geology, marine ecology, coastal geomorphology, and coastal hydrodynamics.

Good News Tuesday! 👍🎉

Congratulations to our Tauranga-based PhD student Akuhata Bailey-Winiata, who won the NextGen Lightening Talk Prize for the best lightening talk presentation and extended abstract at the 2022 Australasian Coasts and Ports Conference, held virtually on 11-13 April. Aku's presentation discussed his recent masters research which sought to understand the exposure of coastal marae (Māori meeting houses) and urupā (burial grounds) to the impact of sea level rise. 🌊

Aku also discussed his research with Claire Concannon on the RNZ podcast 'Our Changing World'. The episode, 'Getting ready for our warmer future', also featured Waikato alumna, now Auckland University researcher, Dr Rebecca Gladstone-Gallagher and our own Professor Conrad Pilditch as they discussed the extreme life of a cockle. 🐚

Caleb Crosbie spent his summer knee-deep in Tauranga’s carbon-rich tidal flats, and now he’s stuck into more research for his Master’s which is focused on the coastal environment. ☀️🌊

Dr Terry Isson was Caleb's supervisor, and he was assisted in his research by Professor Louis Schipper, Dr Charlotte Alster, and master's graduate Allycia van der Laar.

Caleb investigated whether global change 🌏 has had an impact on marine sediment communities, such as tidal flats. He also looked at samples along the Bay of Plenty coastline from Thames through to Whakatāne.

“I’ve always loved the ocean and for me being able to work in the tidal flats doing this research is rewarding," says Caleb.

We are so proud of you Caleb and are stoked to have you as part of our Tauranga campus marine/environmental science fam! 🙌🌊

Studying the unexpected combination of Economics and Chemistry is opening doors for Robbie Maris. 💰 🧪

The Master of Management Studies student, and Tauranga Boys’ College alumnus, was the recipient of two University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships, which enabled him to combine his passions for and .

His first summer research scholarship involved working with Bay of Plenty economic development agency Priority One on a pilot study, building a business case for seaweed farming in the Bay with the potential to expand throughout New Zealand. 🌊

Robbie’s second Summer Research Scholarship was with DairyNZ, where he investigated dairy farm performance and efficiency. 🐄
