The University of Waikatoโ€™s Coastal Marine Field Station was established in December 2011 in Sulphur Point, Tauranga โ€“ the heart of the Bay of Plentyโ€™s thriving marine industry. As part of the Universityโ€™s Environmental Research Institute, the Coastal Marine Field Station is involved in teaching, environmental monitoring and coastal and marine research and discovery. It has become a major centre of marine research excellence in the Bay of Plenty region.

MSc & PhD students Lizzie Thompson and Fiona Chabbey attended the New Zealand Marine Science Society conference in Blenhiem last week to present their research based in the Motiti Protection Area. Lizzie is focused on recruitment and biodiversity, while Fiona is researching habitat characteristics and acoustic monitoring. No research was carried out from the yellow submarine.
