𝙋𝙍𝙄𝙊𝙍𝙄𝙏𝙄𝙕𝙀 𝙎𝙏𝙐𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙏 𝙎𝘼𝙁𝙀𝙏𝙔 𝙉𝙊𝙒!
PROVIDE TOTAL SUSPENSION OF CLASSES AND MAXIMUM ACADEMIC LENIENCY! PROVIDE AID FOR STUDENTS!
Amid the onslaught of successive typhoons affecting the region, the call of students from Saint Louis University remains clear: PRIORITIZE STUDENT SAFETY FIRST BEFORE ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES!
In recent days, many students have already been affected by landslides, flooding, power outages, illness, and the continuing threats to their safety. As the rains and winds continue to intensify, along with their resulting impacts, we do not need solutions that fail to genuinely respond to the realities and lived experiences of the student body.
With this, through the alliance of the university’s student organizations and the growing number of students calling for their right to safe and humane education, we strongly call on the administration to:
1. TOTAL SUSPENSION OF CLASSES AND ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS UNTIL AUGUST 12! This should not be limited to the suspension of face-to-face classes, but should also include synchronous and asynchronous activities, quizzes, examinations, attendance requirements, deadlines, and other academic requirements in the coming days. This is necessary to provide consideration to students who remain unable to travel from their provinces, students who have been severely affected by the typhoon, and to give everyone sufficient time to recover and address the impacts of the disaster before resuming their academic responsibilities.
2. MAXIMUM ACADEMIC LENIENCY FOR ALL AFFECTED STUDENTS! Students should not be penalized for being unable to attend classes, participate online, or submit requirements due to power outages, lack of internet access, transportation difficulties, road closures, or the direct effects of the disaster. Students should also not be required to repeatedly prove their circumstances to the Office of Student Affairs and Services before being granted consideration.
3. OPEN AND MAXIMIZE UNIVERSITY FACILITIES as safe and accessible spaces for students. University facilities may be utilized for charging devices, internet access, water, and other basic needs of students. Furthermore, classrooms and the SLU Dormitory should also be made available to students who need to evacuate or require a safe temporary space.
4. PROVISION OF AID AND EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FOR STUDENTS! The University must coordinate and work with concerned offices, organizations, and local government units to address the immediate needs of students and the communities they belong to.
In this situation, what is needed is an immediate response that genuinely reflects the conditions and needs of the entire student body. We call on the administration to urgently respond to these demands and extend consideration to all students.
