𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗿 a student of the Master in Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) program, presented his action plan titled “Integrated Multi-Hazard Action Plan for Indigenous Peoples in Barangay Umiray, General Nakar, Quezon: Combining Traditional Knowledge and Science-Based Strategies to Address Typhoons, Flooding, and Landslides” before the panel members from Batangas State University.

The panel was chaired by Dr. Amante Moog, together with Dr. Nickie Boy A. Manalo, Prof. Belina Macuha, and external panel member Mr. Chester Keith Villafuerte.

The study is comprehensive, relevant, and well-grounded in the context of localized disaster risk reduction and management for Indigenous Peoples in Barangay Umiray, General Nakar, Quezon. The integration of traditional knowledge and science-based DRRM strategies is commendable and strengthens the practical applicability and cultural relevance of the action plan. The presentation of hazard scenarios, vulnerability conditions, and thematic interventions demonstrates good understanding of multi-hazard risk management and community resilience.

𝗢𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 a student of the Master in Disaster Risk Management (MDRM) program, presented her action plan titled “Comprehensive Multi-Hazard Action Plan for Typhoon-Aggravated Mining Structure Degradation and Socio-Economic Impacts in Marinduque: Addressing Flooding, Landslides, Water Contamination, and Community Risks for the Province of Marinduque” before the panel members from Batangas State University.

The panel was chaired by Dr. Amante Moog, together with Dr. Nickie Boy A. Manalo, Asst. Prof. Redentor Matibag, and external panel member Mr. Chester Keith Villafuerte. The presentation emphasized the vulnerability of the identified barangays in Laurel, Batangas to multiple interconnected hazards associated with Taal Volcano and extreme weather events.

The panel commended the presentation for its comprehensive discussion, organized structure, and highly informative infographics, which effectively illustrated the hazard scenarios, vulnerability conditions, and proposed interventions within the action plan. The visual presentation of data and risk information significantly contributed to the clarity and understanding of the study.

During the presentation, the panel recommended the inclusion of additional Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs) that would strengthen environmental governance and enforcement mechanisms within the study area. Considering that portions of Laurel, Batangas are under the jurisdiction of the Taal Volcano Protected Landscape (TVPL), the panel emphasized the importance of integrating environmental protection and regulatory enforcement strategies into the action plan. The recommendation included strengthening coordination with the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB-TVPL), enhancing enforcement of environmental and land-use regulations, promoting watershed and ecosystem protection, and integrating sustainable environmental management practices into Disaster Prevention and Mitigation initiatives. The panel further highlighted that environmental governance mechanisms should be more visible and operationalized in the PPAs to ensure long-term sustainability, ecological protection, and resilience of vulnerable communities within the protected landscape.
