Who Runs the (IP) World? The Women of ESSU IPOU-ITSO-KTTO!

As we reach the final day of National Women’s Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate the powerhouse team I am lucky enough to work with every day.

In our office—the IPOU-ITSO-KTTO—innovation isn't just about machines and codes; it’s about the brilliance, grit, and "Girl Power" of the women behind the scenes. From navigating complex patents to driving technology transfer and protecting the creative legacies of our university, these modern-day Babaylans are the heartbeat of our innovation ecosystem.

To the IPOU-ITSO-KTTO team: Thank you for your tireless dedication. You prove every day that when Filipinas lead, progress follows.

We’re closing this month with gratitude, but we’re carrying this empowerment straight into National IP Month this April. Watch out, because this team is just getting started!

From November 17–21, 2025, Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) proudly participated in the 5-day Training Seminar on Commercialization, Licensing, and Technology Transfer hosted by Leyte Normal University (LNU) and enriched by the invaluable expertise of resource persons from IPOPHL. This intensive training, attended by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) from across the Visayas, provided a dynamic platform for learning, collaboration, and sharing best practices on intellectual property (IP) protection, technology transfer, licensing, and research commercialization. Representing ESSU were dedicated participants from the Intellectual Property Office of University (IPOU): Ms. Melicil L. Palada, Head of the Technology Commercialization and Marketing Unit; Engr. Karizza Caspe, Licensing Unit Head; and Mr. Byron Consultado, IP Head of ESSU Can-avid. Their active engagement throughout the sessions reflected the strong commitment of ESSU to advancing IP management, strengthening technology transfer mechanisms, and transforming research outputs into meaningful, market-ready innovations that can benefit communities. We extend our deepest gratitude to our University President, Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan, Jr., and our Director, Dr. Kimberly Michelle Operario, for their unwavering support, encouragement, and for allowing our team to take part in this significant capacity-building opportunity. We are likewise sincerely grateful to Leyte Normal University for graciously hosting this remarkable event and to IPOPHL for generously sharing their knowledge, time, and guidance. This enriching experience has further inspired us to champion IP awareness within our institution, enhance our innovation and commercialization initiatives, and continue building strong partnerships with fellow SUCs in the Visayas as we work together toward innovation-driven and research-based development.
