Student nurses from the University of the Visayas proudly represented the university during the Nightingale Quest Quiz Bowl and Singing Nightingale Student Nurses Edition organized by the Philippine Nurses Association โ€“ Cebu Chapter Inc. in celebration of International Nursesโ€™ Day on May 17 at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Carrying this yearโ€™s theme, โ€œOur Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,โ€ the event gathered nursing schools across Cebu in a meaningful celebration of the nursing profession while showcasing excellence, knowledge, and talent among future healthcare professionals.

The annual Nightingale Quest Quiz Bowl also carried the battle cry, โ€œEmpowered Minds: The Nursing Quiz Bowl 2026,โ€ highlighting the importance of knowledge, critical thinking, and empowered learning among future nurses.

Representing the university in the Nightingale Quest Quiz Bowl were Jasmine Luma-ad (4th year), Quena Kriska Noel (3rd year), and Shekinah Raiza Peรฑas (2nd year) under the guidance of coach Mr. Moneto Casagan. The team demonstrated determination, teamwork, and academic excellence as they competed alongside some of the cityโ€™s brightest nursing students. The competition highlighted the participantsโ€™ knowledge and critical thinking skills in various nursing concepts and healthcare-related topics.

Meanwhile, Marianne Gerliet Cabeleรฑo (3rd year) proudly took the stage as the universityโ€™s representative for the Singing Nightingale 2026 Student Nurses Edition under the mentorship of Mrs. Armida Gutierrez. Through music and performance, she showcased not only musical talent and confidence, but also the passion and heart that student nurses bring beyond the clinical setting.

While the university may not have secured a placing in this yearโ€™s competitions, the dedication, courage, professionalism, and sportsmanship shown by the delegates remain a source of pride and inspiration for the UV community. Their willingness to represent the university on a prestigious platform embodies the values of perseverance, excellence, and service that define the nursing profession.

The University of the Visayas community also extends its gratitude for the unwavering support of Dean Yvonne M. Sevilla, the rest of the faculty members, NSBO Officers, and the 2nd Year Nursing students whose encouragement and presence contributed greatly to the success and meaningful participation of the university delegates throughout the event.

More than a competition, the celebration served as a reminder of the vital role nurses play in shaping the future of healthcare. The University of the Visayas community proudly congratulates its representatives and coaches for their hard work, commitment, and willingness to rise to the challenge. Their participation alone reflects the spirit of empowered nurses who continue to lead with knowledge, compassion, and purpose. ๐Ÿฉบโญ๐Ÿค

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 95% of reported cases of cervical cancer are caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), with nearly all cases linked to infection with oncogenic types of HPV. In addition, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women and the eighth most common cancer worldwide.

In observance of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, it is important to emphasize the value of routine screenings in detecting this disease early, when it is most treatable and often curable. More than saving lives, early detection empowers individuals. Together, let us promote awareness and take proactive steps to ensure that cervical cancer does not go undetected.

The BSN Level 1 nursing students successfully conducted a health education seminar on May 2, 2026, at Inday Teresing Hall. The event carried the theme โ€œWELL SIP: Wellness Education on Literacy and Stress Intervention Program,โ€ aiming to promote awareness of maintaining both physical and mental well-being.

The program was hosted by Mr. Bernil Sala and Ms. Thea Santillan, who effectively guided the flow of the event. It was proudly sponsored by Pocari Sweat, a brand known for advocating proper hydration. The seminar was organized under the guidance and the approval of the CAHS Dean, Dr. Yvonne M. Sevilla, with the help of their HE Instructors Ms. Lea Armeรฑa, Mr. Godsent Ambrad, and Ms. Llanne Concepcion, whose leadership and support served as pillars of the eventโ€™s success.

The guest speaker, Dr. Vida R. Manapsal from Cebu Doctorsโ€™ University, delivered an insightful discussion highlighting the importance of hydration, proper nutrition, and regular exercise in maintaining both physical and mental health. She clearly explained the principles of a balanced diet, appropriate physical activity, and the recommended daily water intake. Additionally, she emphasized the benefits of Pocari Sweat, noting its electrolyte content that supports hydration and overall body function.

Following the discussion, the students actively participated in an engaging activity involving five scrambled words related to Pocari Sweat. The participants showed enthusiasm and energy, with five students selected as winners. They were awarded Pocari bags as prizes, adding excitement and motivation to the activity.

Overall, the seminar was a remarkable success, effectively promoting health awareness and encouraging students to adopt healthier lifestyle practices. More than just a requirement for the Health Education subject, the seminar served as a meaningful foundation for the studentsโ€™ future endeavors in promoting wellness and community health.

Malaria continues to threaten millions of lives around the world, particularly in vulnerable communities where access to healthcare and preventive measures is limited. Despite being preventable and treatable, this disease still claims livesโ€”especially among children and pregnant women. World Malaria Day serves as a powerful reminder that awareness, education, and collective action are essential in the fight against malaria.

Through simple yet effective measuresโ€”such as using insecticide-treated mosquito nets, maintaining clean surroundings to prevent mosquito breeding, and seeking early medical careโ€”we can significantly reduce the spread of this disease. Healthcare workers, communities, and individuals all play a crucial role in protecting lives and promoting healthier environments.

Let us stand together in raising awareness, supporting global and local health initiatives, and encouraging everyone to take part in prevention efforts. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a greater impact in the journey toward a malaria-free world.

Protect yourself and your loved onesโ€”sleep under mosquito nets, eliminate stagnant water, and consult healthcare providers at the first sign of symptoms. Share this message and be part of the movement to end malaria for good.
