The ๐€๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐Œ๐š๐ฃ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ (AEM) joins the nation in commemorating the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines โ€” a defining and painful chapter in our nationโ€™s history.

On ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ, then-President ๐…๐ž๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง๐š๐ง๐ ๐„. ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฌ issued Proclamation No. 1081, placing the Philippines under Martial Law. The period that followed was marked by the suppression of civil liberties and documented cases of grave human rights violations, including torture, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and extrajudicial killings.

For us as Iskolars ng Bayan, remembering this history is more than looking back. It is an opportunity to honor the Filipinos who endured, resisted, and sacrificed in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and human dignity.

Memory calls us to responsibility. We must continue to value truth, uphold human rights, speak against injustice, and protect democratic institutions โ€” not only for the scholars of today, but also for the generations of Filipinos who will come after us.

Let us remember that silence can allow abuses to persist, while informed and responsible citizens help safeguard the values that hold democracy together.

Earlier this month, an output from the undergraduate thesis titled โ€œDecoding Political Language: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Tanong ng Bayan Senatorial Face-Off 2025โ€ was transformed into an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) material and displayed along the hallway of the English Language Studies (ELS) classrooms.

The bilingual poster unpacks the language of politics and persuasion by examining how politicians employ linguistic strategies such as pronoun use, emotional language, repetition, and code-switching. Beyond identifying these strategies, it also calls attention to the underlying ideologies embedded in political discourse โ€” encouraging readers to look beyond what is said and critically examine how messages are constructed to influence audiences.

More importantly, the poster contributes to voter education and political literacy. By equipping readers, particularly young and first-time voters, with the ability to recognize persuasive tactics, distinguish substantive political messages from rhetorical performance, and critically evaluate political discourse, the material encourages more informed and thoughtful voting decisions.

Its strategic placement within the academic building of the College of Arts and Sciences further extends the reach of the research. Presented in two languages, the material promotes accessibility and readability while inviting a wider audience to engage critically with political language. In this way, an undergraduate research output becomes more than an academic requirement โ€” it becomes a tool for fostering critical awareness and more inclusive participation in political discourse.
