Today, we commemorate the life and sacrifice of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose courage and conviction became a defining chapter in the nation's continuing pursuit of democracy and freedom.

As we observe Ninoy Aquino Day, may we reflect on the enduring value of civic engagement, the defense of democratic institutions, and the responsibility of every citizen to remain vigilant in safeguarding the rights and liberties we enjoy today.

Truly, the Filipino is worth dying for.

Crim Law 1 Section Locke Donates Essential Supplies to CVDC–Bahay Pag-asa

DAVAO CITY — Students of Criminal Law 1 – Section Locke, under the instruction of Atty. Jeremiah Caballero, conducted a donation drive for the Children’s Village Davao City (CVDC) – Bahay Pag-asa on August 19, 2026, providing essential supplies for children currently under the facility’s care.

The class donated 60 bags, 60 pairs of pants, 60 pairs of slippers, milk, biscuits, and various toiletries for the center’s residents.

As of August 2026, CVDC–Bahay Pag-asa houses approximately 60 Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) and Children at Risk (CAR). The facility operates as a 24-hour residential care center established to shelter, protect, and rehabilitate CICL and CAR pursuant to Republic Act No. 9344, otherwise known as the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, as amended.

The donation drive forms part of the class's efforts to extend assistance to vulnerable sectors of society while fostering a deeper appreciation of child protection, restorative justice, and community service among future members of the legal profession.

Beyond providing material support, the initiative served as an opportunity for students to engage with the realities faced by children under rehabilitation and care, reinforcing the role of the law not only in addressing wrongdoing but also in promoting rehabilitation, dignity, and social reintegration.

Through the collective efforts of the students and their professor, the activity highlighted the importance of compassion and service alongside legal education, reflecting the values of social responsibility and community engagement within the JMCFI College of Law.

Kadayawan is a reminder that our strength lies not only in what we have achieved, but also in our shared commitment to unity amidst diversity.

May this celebration inspire gratitude, foster meaningful connections, and deepen our appreciation for the heritage and stories that bring us together.

What happens when 18 volunteer lawyers and 55 law student practitioners spend a day inside the Davao Prison and Penal Farm?

More than case evaluations and sentence computations, Project Dungog's third onsite visit became a powerful reminder that behind every jail record is a person, and behind every petition for habeas corpus is the promise of liberty.

Project Dungog Represents PDLs in Hearing of Nine Habeas Corpus Petitions

DAVAO CITY — Volunteer lawyers and law students under Project Dungog appeared before the court on August 10, 2026, for the hearing of nine petitions for habeas corpus filed on behalf of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) believed to have overstayed beyond the period of their lawful detention.

The legal team was composed of Atty. Resci Angelli Rizada-Nolasco, Atty. Jason Lobaton, Atty. Nhassie Gonzaga, Atty. Matt Santiago, and Atty. Maybelene Lozada, together with JMCFI College of Law law students Jerard C. Tamonlang, A***n Jane Ramos, and Eden Siatriz.

Project Dungog is an access-to-justice initiative that seeks to identify and assist overstaying PDLs whose continued detention may warrant judicial review and intervention. Through the filing of appropriate legal remedies, the initiative aims to help ensure that no individual remains deprived of liberty beyond what is authorized by law.

The hearing marks another step in the initiative's continuing efforts to address jail congestion, safeguard the rights of PDLs, and promote the fair and efficient administration of justice. It likewise provided law students with valuable exposure to courtroom proceedings and public interest lawyering under the guidance of volunteer lawyers.

Through the collective efforts of volunteer lawyers, law students, and partner institutions, Project Dungog continues to advance meaningful access to justice while reinforcing the legal profession's commitment to protecting the rights and liberties of all persons.
