And somehow, the more we learn, the more we understand how much of you we never saw.
We used to think teaching was standing in front of a room, explaining a lesson, checking papers, giving grades, and going home. Now, little by little, we are discovering everything that happens behind those things, the exhaustion you carry quietly, the patience you have to find on days you have none left, the students you worry, and the parts of yourself you give away without ever asking to be remembered.
We are becoming teachers, and it scares us sometimes.
Because now we know how hard it is to keep showing up.
But perhaps that is why, beyond everything we become, beyond the degrees we earn, the classrooms we enter, the titles we carry, and the distance life takes us we still find ourselves coming back to you.
Back to the teacher who believed in us when we were difficult to believe in.
Back to the classroom where we first learned that mistakes were not the end.
Back to the voice that told us, "You can do this," before we knew how to tell ourselves the same thing.
And maybe one day, when we finally stand where you once stood, we will understand that becoming a teacher was never just about teaching.
It was about becoming someone worth coming back to.
So, to the teachers who came before us, thank you.
We are not only becoming teachers because you taught us how.
We are becoming teachers because, somewhere along the way, you made us want to be the kind of person a student would come back to.

With a gratitude we are only beginning to understand.
