The USG also recognizes the concerns raised by students and parents regarding the expectation that college students should simply endure severe weather because they are already considered adults. While students are capable of making responsible decisions, being a college student does not remove the risks posed associated with severe weather. Many students also travel considerable distances to reach the University.
We believe that ๐ป๐ผ ๐๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป. Academic responsibility should not require students to expose themselves to unreasonable risks, particularly when severe weather directly affects their ability to safely travel and participate in academic activities. ๐ฆ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐บ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ. Resilience should not mean repeatedly placing students, faculty, and personnel in situations where they must risk their safety simply to fulfill academic or professional obligations.
We recognize that every student experiences severe weather differently. Some may be able to travel safely, while others may be dealing with flooded communities, unavailable transportation, disrupted utilities, displacement, or unsafe roads. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ, ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ด๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ. ๐ช๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ผ๐, ๐ง๐จ๐ฃ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐.
