Jewellmae Buta, 23, an agriculture entrepreneurship graduate of Southern Leyte State University โ€“ Hinunangan Campus (SLSU-HC), whose project proposal on organic native chicken passed the provincial level screening for the Department of Agriculture's (DA's) Youth Farmers' Challenge: Kabataang Agribiz Competitive Grant Assistance Program. DA recently launched the award, which aims to provide financial grant assistance to youth interested in enterprises in the agri-fishery sector.

The award is given to Jewellmae Buta on the 26th of August, 2021, at Sophia's Way, Leyte Park Resort Hotel, Tacloban City, Leyte. She will receive P50,000 cash to finance her agri-based project focused on the production of organic native chicken.

โ€œItโ€™s a leap of faith,โ€ as described by Buta. โ€œMy proposed Agri-Business Venture focused on the production of Organic Native Chicken. The Business Model Canvas (BMC) was presented and defended in DA-RFO 8, Tacloban City to the Panel of Judges,โ€ she added. โ€œI am one of the blessed to be selected as a winner of the "Outstanding BMCโ€ for Southern Leyte. This 50,000-peso cash grant will serve as start-up capital for my proposed micro-enterprise.โ€ Through the leadership and guidance of Agriculture Secretary William Dar with the support of Sen. Imee Marcos, this initiative is to encourage and persuade the young Filipinos to go back into farming.

According to DA, the majority of the youth are no longer interested in agriculture, and that as of 2018 is 57 years old is the average age of farmers. They added that the number of farmworkers has also dropped since 2007 at around 1.5% per year and those employed in agriculture also plunged from 11.84 million in 2015 to 9.8 million in 2020.

Considering the following evaluation criteria: entrepreneur attitude, innovativeness, the revenue stream of the business proposal, and value addition, DA will award 1,300 winners with 50,000 cash in the provincial level (nationwide), three winners per region with 150,000 cash at the regional level, and a whopping 300,000 cash for the three winners in the national level. On when and where they can claim their prize and their corresponding responsibilities, DA will notify with a Notice of Award to all provincial winners.

Jewellmae Butaโ€™s achievement is the epitome of youth's innovative and aggressive drive towards agriculture dynamism and food security in the country. Despite the challenges brought by this current pandemic, it has pushed her to excel in her chosen agriculture career path.

The SLSU-HC family is proud of her and her achievement and encourages other youths, especially the alumni, to participate in agribusiness undertakings and implement related enterprises that center on rural productivity and income.
