84 BSA students participate in MMSU’s Annual Rice Paddy Art
Selected second year BS Agriculture (BSA) and third year students majoring in Agricultural Extension participated in the paddy establishment for Mariano Marcos State University’s (MMSU) 9th Annual Rice Paddy Art, held on September 16–17, 2026, in front of the MMSU Administration Building.
The activity was jointly organized by the MMSU-Extension Directorate Office, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD), and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice). This year’s Rice Paddy Art features “MMSU Going ASEAN,” showcasing the university’s connection to the ASEAN community through an intricate design created using different rice varieties.
Before the actual planting, the student-participants attended a briefing conducted by staff of the MMSU-Extension Directorate. The orientation introduced the students to the proper planting techniques and arrangement required to bring the design to life as a living rice artwork.
The intricate design will be brought to life through the strategic planting of IR 1552 purple rice and standard green rice, with students carefully following the prescribed layout to achieve the intended patterns and visual effect.
Beyond contributing to the University’s annual Rice Paddy Art tradition, the activity provided the BSA students with a meaningful hands-on learning experience, allowing them to apply their knowledge of rice production while working as a team in an actual field-based activity.
The participation of the students highlights MMSU’s commitment to experiential learning, where agricultural education extends beyond the classroom and into practical activities that celebrate rice, agriculture, and culture.
