On this Day in 1972:

ANINO NG KAHAPON: On September 23, 1972, Ferdinand Marcos Sr. addressed the nation to announce Martial Law, but it was actually on September 21 that he signed Proclamation No. 1081 to officially declare it. Marcos crafted a narrative around this date, even marking it as National Thanksgiving Day in 1973, leading many to mistakenly believe Martial Law began on the 21st.

However, the groundwork for Martial Law began much earlier. Just a week prior, Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. warned of Marcos's plans in a speech on September 13, unveiling the covert "Oplan Sagittarius" strategy to control Metro Manila. Shockingly, Marcos used bombings, including the Plaza Miranda incident in 1971, as justification for his authoritarian rule.

[54th MARTIAL LAW COMMEMORATION: ON WEDNESDAYS WE WEAR BLACK]

ON WEDNESDAYS, WE WEAR BLACK.

This 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law calls on the Lasallian community more than ever to make a loud statement and to never let our shout for justice and truth be silenced.

Black has never been just a color—it is a testament to the portion of our tragic history that we still demand accountability for.

Let us wear black as we live out the present and honor the 70,000 incarcerated, 34,000 tortured, and the 3,200 killed—the Filipinos whose sacrifices are the reason of the freedom we now hold dear today.
