The Videophone, invented by Filipino engineer and physicist Gregorio Y. Zara, was the first two-way video communication device, paving the way for modern video conferencing technology. His invention allowed callers to see each other while conversing, a concept that later became essential in digital communication. Apart from the videophone, Zara held 30 patents for various innovations, including an induction compass used by pilots, a solar-powered water heater, and an alcohol-fueled airplane engine. His contributions to science and technology also included the discovery of the Zara Effect, a law of electrical kinetic resistance, further solidifying his legacy as one of the Philippines’ greatest inventors.

Pinyapel is an innovative specialty paper developed in the Philippines, crafted from discarded pineapple leaves. This project exemplifies the application of intellectual property (IP) in promoting sustainable design and economic development.

The Design Center of the Philippines, in collaboration with partners, developed an IP-protected process to transform agricultural waste into high-value material suitable for various applications, including packaging and paper products. The initiative not only addresses environmental concerns by repurposing agricultural waste but also enhances the livelihood of local farmers.

By securing IP rights, the creators ensure the protection of their innovative process, enabling them to manage its use and distribution effectively. This approach encourages further innovation and investment in sustainable materials, showcasing how IP can be leveraged to foster responsible production and consumption. | Source: https://www.ipophil.gov.ph/news/the-ip-journey-of-pinyapel-from-creation-to-going-global/

Trademarks are essential for protecting brand identity, and the ™ (trademark) and ® (registered trademark) symbols help indicate the legal status of a brand’s name, logo, or slogan.

The ™ symbol is used for marks that are not officially registered but are still being claimed as a brand identifier. It provides some level of protection under common law but does not offer the full legal benefits of registration. On the other hand, the ® symbol is used for trademarks that have been officially registered with a government intellectual property office.

This registration grants exclusive rights, making it easier to enforce legal action against infringement. Businesses typically use the ™ symbol while awaiting registration approval and switch to ® once the mark is legally secured. Understanding the distinction between these symbols is crucial for proper trademark usage and protection.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) is the government agency responsible for overseeing and enforcing intellectual property (IP) rights in the country. Established in 1998 under Republic Act No. 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, IPOPHL replaced earlier laws governing patents and copyrights to create a more comprehensive system for protecting intellectual property. The agency administers and implements laws related to patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indications, trade secrets, and industrial designs, ensuring that inventors, businesses, and artists have legal protection for their creations.

IPOPHL also handles IP enforcement and dispute resolution, working with law enforcement agencies to combat counterfeiting, piracy, and infringement. Additionally, the agency promotes public awareness and education through seminars, training programs, and collaborations with schools and industries.

With the rise of digital innovation, IPOPHL has modernized its services by introducing online IP filing systems and strengthening international partnerships, particularly with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to enhance global IP protection. Its efforts have led to a steady increase in IP applications and stronger enforcement against piracy, helping to safeguard Filipino creativity, encourage innovation, and drive economic growth.
