𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 🍃🏞️💚🌱

On May 22, the International Day for Biodiversity is celebrated to increase awareness of biodiversity issues the world faces and to commemorate the first global agreement that was made for protecting Earth’s ecosystems. This year’s theme entitled “𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁,” showcases how everyday choices, community-based approaches, and local actions can greatly contribute towards achieving global goals. It aims to enable and empower contributions of local actors, including indigenous people, women, youth groups, and others.

The Philippines is known to be among the 18 mega-biodiverse countries in the world. The country is home to more than 52,177 described species and 228 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) that house 855 globally important species in Southeast Asia. Abundant biodiversity ensures ecological resilience and functions as a natural defense against climate change. However, as ecosystems are being degraded by human activities — 1 million of the world’s estimated 8 million species of animals and plants are being threatened with extinction. In the Philippines, the rapid transition towards renewable energy through infrastructure projects causes major disruptions to various ecosystems and overlooks protection for biodiversity.

In observance of International Day for Biodiversity, the UP Society of Human Settlements Planners advocates for the whole-of-society approach in development planning — recognizing that halting and reversing biodiversity loss requires holistic and inclusive problem-solving among stakeholders and not a top-down approach. In line with this, we are reminded that no green infrastructure must be built at the cost of native ecosystems and that small contributions may lead to great impacts.

“𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵’𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀—𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲!”

Rivers are water channels that receive and transport water, energy, nutrients, and other materials to outlets like a larger river, lake, or the ocean. Conversely, these aquatic ecosystems influence local environments’ temperature, biodiversity, soil quality, and activities—transportation, agriculture, market, and recreation, which have fed cultures and civilizations throughout history!

However, urban rivers face severe ecological degradation as many rivers in the Philippines are situated in urban areas that directly expose them to solid waste, sewage, residences, industries, and grey infrastructure.

𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗦𝗬𝗔𝗟 𝗡𝗔 𝗣𝗔𝗛𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗚 𝗡𝗚 𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔 𝗞𝗔𝗬 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗘𝗟 𝗕. 𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗖𝗜𝗢 𝗦𝗔 𝗗𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗔 𝗨𝗦𝗖-𝗖𝗦𝗖 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦

Ang UP Society of Human Settlements Planners ay lubos na pinagmamalaki at taas kamaong sinusuportahan si Sean sa kaniyang pagtakbo bilang SAKBAYAN CHE Student Council Chairperson sa darating na USC-CSC Elections. Ang pagtanggap niya sa hamon ay isang manipesto ng kaniyang walang katapusang pagnanais paglingkuran ang mag-aaral ng Kolehiyo ng Ekolohiyang Pantao.

Sa walang hintong paglala ng krisis na nararanasan ng mga mag-aaral ng Kolehiyo, lalong-lalo na sa patuloy na pagtaas ng presyo ng mga kasangkapan at manuals na ginagamit sa mga laboratoryo at sa malayang pag sasagawa ng mga fieldwork, kilala si Sean bilang isa sa mga progresibong lider-estudyante na patuloy na bumoboses para sa danas na nararanasan ng sangkaestudyantehan, at ang pagsulong sa mapagpalayang pamantasan. Hindi lamang sa sektor ng kaestudyantehan, maigting niya ring pinapatambol ang adbokasiya sa pagprotekta sa hanay ng sektor ng kalikasan. Ang aktibong pagbitbit niya sa adbokasiyang ito ay kinakikitaang mariing pagpapahalaga sa tunay at makabayang pagrerepresenta sa buong sangkaestudyantehan at sambayanan.

Bilang isa sa mga Resident Planner ng organisasyon na naglulungsad ng inklusibong pagpaplano ng mga paninirahan ng mga tao at sustenableng paggamit ng likas na yaman galing sa kapaligiran, nakatitiyak ang mga mag-aaral ng Kolehiyo ng Ekolohiyang Pantao kay Sean sa isang mapagpalaya at radikal na pamumuno para sa sangkaestudyantehan.

Maraming salamat sa pagtanggap ng hamon, Sean! Makakatiyak ka na kasama mo kami sa laban at sa iyong masigabong pamumuno sa kolehiyo.

Annually, on May 3, the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day – a global observance that highlights the crucial role of free and independent journalism in safeguarding democracy and human rights. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, the event traces its roots to the Windhoek Declaration of 1991, a landmark statement by African journalists insisting that a free press is essential for democracy and development.

The freedom of expression and access to information are not mere privileges but fundamental human rights. This day serves as a reminder to uphold media independence, protect journalists from attacks, and honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. When a journalist is silenced, society loses its eyes and ears to controversial truths and its voice for the voiceless.

Beyond this, access to reliable information forms the foundation of sustainable community planning. Without press freedom, communities are left in the dark. To build inclusive and truly responsive human settlements, press freedom must be protected and upheld.

Therefore, the University of the Philippines Society of Human Settlements Planners affirms the importance of celebrating press freedom globally, and more especially here in the country. As future planners, we recognize that press freedom is vital in ensuring transparency, accountability, and participation in community development.

𝙈𝙐𝙇𝘼 𝙎𝘼 𝙋𝘼𝙈𝘼𝙉𝙏𝘼𝙎𝘼𝙉 𝙃𝘼𝙉𝙂𝙂𝘼𝙉𝙂 𝙎𝘼 𝙇𝘼𝙉𝙎𝘼𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙉, 𝙄𝙎𝙆𝙊𝙇𝘼𝙍 𝙉𝙂 𝘽𝘼𝙔𝘼𝙉, 𝙃𝘼𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘼𝙔 𝙆𝘼𝙎𝘼𝙈𝘼 𝘼𝙉𝙂 𝙈𝙂𝘼 𝙈𝘼𝙉𝙂𝘼𝙂𝘼𝙂𝘼𝙒𝘼!

Sumipa man ang presyo ng gasolina at mga bilihin, ngunit nananatili pa ring mababa ang sahod ng mga manggagawa!

Ang pasakit ng baon sa utang na ekonomiya ay tila permanente na, habang ang mga manggagawa ay nananatiling kontraktuwal!

Samantala, ang kabataang Pilipino ay patuloy na hinuhubog ng neoliberal na edukasyon upang maging lakas-paggawa lamang para sa ibang bansa.
Sa araw na ito ng mga manggagawa, nakikiisa ang UP Society of Human Settlements Planners sa lahat ng kontraktuwal na manggagawa, sa mga patuloy na pinagsasamantalahan ng ganid na kapitalista, at sa bawat manggagawang nagsusumikap sa gitna ng lumalalang krisis pang-ekonomiya na nauugat sa hindi makamasang pagpaplano.

Naninindigan ang organisasyon na ang pagpaplano ay hindi lamang nakatuon sa pisikal na imprastruktura, kundi pati sa mga polisiyang direktang humuhubog sa kalagayan at seguridad ng mga manggagawang Pilipino. Higit pa sa nakikita, ang tunay na sukatan ng pagpaplano ay kung paano ito nararamdaman at naipapakita sa materyal na kondisyon ng mamamayan.

Sa kasalukuyan, patuloy na napipilitang magprotesta ang mga manggagawa para lamang ipaglaban ang makataong paggawa. Kamakailan, anim na araw na nagmobilisa ang hanay ng Glowhrain KMU – Kowloon House West Avenue chapter upang igiit ang makatarungang pasahod at pagbabalik ng service charges na matagal nang ipinagkakait sa kanila. Ipinakita ng laban na may tagumpay sa kolektibong pagkilos, ngunit malinaw rin na hindi dapat kailanganin ang rally kung tunay na pinangangalagaan ng mga umiiral na batas ang karapatan ng manggagawa. Sa loob mismo ng mga institusyon tulad ng UPLB, nananatiling suliranin ang kakulangan at paisa-isang paglalaan ng plantilla items, na nagbubunga ng patuloy na “No Work, No Pay” na kalagayan para sa mga kontraktuwal. Samantala, sa gitna ng krisis sa enerhiya, itinutulak ang mga polisiyang tulad ng 4-day work week na tila solusyon, ngunit sa realidad ay lalo lamang nagpapasan ng bigat sa mga manggagawang Pilipino nang hindi tinutugunan ang ugat ng problema.

Bilang mga tagaplano, tinututulan natin ang mga ganitong polisiyang hindi konsultatibo. Ang top-down na pagdedesisyon ay nananatiling hiwalay sa reyalidad ng mga nasa laylayan, at sa halip na magdulot ng ginhawa, lalo lamang nitong pinapalala ang kanilang paghihirap.
Kaya ngayong Araw ng mga Manggagawa, makatarungan ang paglabas sa lansangan at pakikiisa sa malawak na hanay ng uring manggagawa. Ipaglaban natin ang makamasang pagpaplano na nakaugat sa tunay na danas ng Pilipino. Hindi tayo titigil hangga’t ang plano ay hindi lamang nakasulat, kundi nararamdaman sa dignidad, seguridad, at makataong pamumuhay ng bawat manggagawa.
