Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Caesar Saloma on his appointment as Executive Vice President of the University of the Philippines!

A distinguished physicist and academic leader, EVP Saloma brings decades of international recognition and leadership across UP's science institutions.

We at OVPRI are privileged to work alongside him as he also serves as chair of the Task Force for Enhancing PhD Graduation, R&D, and Public Service Performance.

UP President Angelo Jimenez has appointed Professor Emeritus Caesar Saloma as executive vice president, effective May 11. Saloma was UP Diliman chancellor from February 2011 to February 2014, College of Science dean from June 2006 to February 2011, and National Institute of Physics director from June 2000 to May 2006. His awards and titles include: the Galileo Galilei Award from the International Commission for Optics in 2004, the ASEAN Outstanding Scientist and Technologist Award in 2008, Academician of the Philippine National Academy of Science Technology in 2005, and UP Scientist III for six consecutive three-year terms beginning in 2006. As administrator, he received the Presidential Lingkod ng Bayan Award for Outstanding Public Service in 2008 and the DOST-NAST Outstanding Science Administrator in 2010. Last year, Saloma became the first Filipino to be elected Optica fellow of the Optical Society of America, the leading society in optics and photonics established in 1916.

HAPPENING TODAY. Students from UP and across Metro Manila are putting data science and machine learning to work in a hackathon. This is brought to the Philippines through UP’s collaboration with the University of Tokyo’s Matsuo Lab, supported by JICA.

Organized by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and Office of the Vice President for Digital Transformation (OVPDx), the day features independent work session and a closing networking session with the Matsuo Lab team—an opportunity for the participants to connect directly with one of the world's leading AI research groups.

Inoblasyon: The UP Innovation Summit 2026 brought together researchers, innovators, startups, government leaders, industry partners, investors, and communities around a shared commitment to building the Philippines into a globally competitive innovation nation.

In his message, VPRI Joel Joseph Marciano Jr. noted that impactful research demands more than good ideas; it requires the institutions and processes that can carry those ideas through.

Organized by OVPRI and the UP System TTBDO, in partnership with the OVPPA, Inoblasyon also marked the formal launch of OVPRI as the UP System's coordinating body for research, innovation, and partnerships in support of national priorities.

The University of the Philippines brought together researchers, industry and government leaders, and community partners for 𝐈𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐲𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐏 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 to showcase the impact of its research breakthroughs and cross-sector partnerships.

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, tasked with strengthening the University's capacity for research, creative work, and innovation, was also formally launched at the event.
