Happy Birthday flower bass, Ezra!đŸŽ¶

You have always been an incredible bass whose voice is the foundation of every harmony. Wishing you all of the good things this world can offer. May you remain a bass whose tone adds depth, warmth, and beauty to every piece we sing.

Thank you for the grounding presence you bring both musically and personally. May your year be filled with rich lows, resonant joys, and melodies that stay with you long after the final chord. Keep singing your heart out! 💜

“Rosas Pandan” — performed by the NMSCST Chorale.

Context:
“Rosas Pandan” is a lively Visayan folk song from the Philippines that tells the story of a charming young woman named Rosas Pandan, who comes from the island of Cebu. The song describes her beauty, grace, and captivating presence as she visits a nearby town, causing excitement among the people who admire her confidence and joyful spirit. Often performed by choirs because of its rhythmic energy and playful character, the piece showcases traditional Filipino musical elements such as quick melodic lines and dance-like rhythms. Though lighthearted and fun, the song also reflects Filipino cultural themes of community, admiration, and the celebration of a vibrant young woman whose arrival brings happiness wherever she goes.

“This is the Moment” — performed by the NMSCST Chorale.

Context:
In the musical Jekyll & Hyde, “This Is the Moment” is sung by Dr. Henry Jekyll at the pivotal point when he prepares to test his experimental serum on himself. Convinced he has finally reached the breakthrough he’s been striving for, Jekyll expresses a surge of determination, hope, and pride as he imagines proving his critics wrong and accomplishing something monumental for humanity. The song carries an anthem-like sense of triumph, yet it is deeply ironic because this moment of bold ambition is what unleashes his darker alter ego, Mr. Hyde, setting the tragedy of the story in motion. This combination of dramatic significance and emotional power is why the piece is so frequently performed by choirs and soloists outside the show.

“Voltes V” performed by the NMSCST Chorale.

Context:
Voltes V is a 1977 Japanese super robot anime created by Toei Animation and part of Tadao Nagahama’s “Robot Romance Trilogy.” Though popular in Japan, the series became a cultural phenomenon in the Philippines, where it resonated deeply with themes of resistance, family, and revolution. Its sudden ban in 1979 during the Marcos dictatorship—officially for “excessive violence,” but widely believed to be due to its themes of rebellion—cemented its symbolic status in Filipino pop culture. Voltes V later returned to Philippine television and continues to influence generations through reruns, merchandise, and modern adaptations.

Here’s the powerful performance of the NMSCST Chorale to the official contest piece of the MASTS Games 2025 Standard/Mixed Choir Competition.

Context:
“Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,” composed by Ryan Cayabyab and performed by Hajji Alejandro, is a landmark Filipino song that won first place at the inaugural Metro Manila Popular Music Festival (Metropop) in 1978. Written during a time when Western music dominated the airwaves, the song became a proud anthem of the emerging Original Pilipino Music (OPM) movement, which sought to promote and celebrate Filipino artistry. Its title, which translates to “How Beautiful Our Music Is,” encapsulates its message of national pride and cultural appreciation. Through its uplifting melody and lyrics, the song honors the richness, diversity, and emotional depth of Filipino music, encouraging listeners to take pride in their own heritage rather than imitate foreign influences. Beyond its musical success, “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika” has endured as a cultural symbol of Filipino identity, creativity, and unity, solidifying Ryan Cayabyab’s legacy as one of the country’s most influential composers.

Here’s the challenging warm-up piece of the NMSCST Chorale performed during the MASTS Games 2025 Standard/Mixed Chorale.

Context:
Koyu No Tebulul, meaning “A Tree On A Hill”, is based on a T'boli traditional song (Arr. Eudenice Palaruan). The T’boli people are one of the indigenous peoples of South Cotabato in Southern Mindanao, Philippines. In this particular work, the composer tries to capture the reverberation of one who sings by the mountain cliff by doubling and bouncing the syllable of the text. The noisy ringing of the “R” consonant expresses both the chirping of the birds as well as the stridulating crickets.
