The First National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo 🕊️

The nation honors National Artist Fernando Amorsolo on his 134th Birth Anniversary.

The country celebrated its first National Artist in the form of Fernando C. Amorsolo. The esteemed title of "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art" was bestowed upon Amorsolo during the grand opening of the art center at the Manila Hilton on January 23, 1969, which showcased an exhibition of his chosen masterpieces. Upon his return from studying abroad in the 1920s, Amorsolo became a trailblazer of the backlighting technique, a hallmark of his artistic expression, bringing to life figures, clusters of leaves, flowing hair, and the delicate shapes of the human body on canvas.

As Nick Joaquin noted, this light embodies the joy of a sensualist profoundly in love with the earth and the Philippine sun, mirroring Amorsolo’s own lively essence. His acknowledgment underscores the vast creative impact he had, which has "defined and sustained a unique aspect of the nation’s artistic and cultural legacy."

In commemoration of the 22nd death anniversary of National Artist Nicomedes “Nick” Joaquin.

Known widely as "Nick Joaquin," he made significant contributions to the English language, leading critics to coin the term "Joaquinesque" to describe his elaborate, Spanish-influenced English, which embodies his reinterpretations grounded in Filipinism. Bienvenido Lumbera remarked that Joaquin's significance in Philippine literature stems from his exploration of the nation's colonial past under Spanish dominion and his inquiry into the psychological dimensions of social change. His distinguished works encompass 'The Woman Who Has Two Navels,' 'A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino,' 'Manila, My Manila: A History for the Young,' 'The Ballad of the Five Battles,' 'Rizal in Saga,' 'Almanac for Manilenos,' and 'Cave and Shadows.'
