[𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦] 𝗗𝗦𝗖𝗧𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀

The latest iteration of DSCTA Conversations featured Japanese performance artist Tappei Noguchi, who gave a lecture and workshop centered around his current creative and research projects. He is currently a Japan Foundation Arts Fellow, developing an archipelagic performance practice through field research and artistic collaborations across the Philippines, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste. The act of “carrying” and “unexpected encounters” are significant in two of his ongoing performance projects: Tire Pull, an endurance performance where he drags a tire while circumnavigating islands on foot, as well as Octopus Mikoshi, where he uses the figure of the octopus in collaborative performances that explore relationships between the individual and society. His workshop involved a bamboo sculpture of an octopus individually carried via each of the eight legs, but ultimately resulting in a single collaborative motion.

The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, in partnership with the Lipad-Aral Program, welcomed students to the Lipad-Aral Fall 2027 Caravan on September 15 at the CAL AVR.

The session introduced students to opportunities for academic exchange and international study through the Lipad-Aral Program. Adding a personal perspective to the session, DSCTA student Ana Daniela Percy shared her testimonial about her experience during Spring 2026 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Her experience offered students a glimpse into the opportunities and learning that come with participating in an international academic exchange.

The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts (DSCTA) invites the public to DSCTA Conversations, featuring performance artist Tappei Noguchi.

The presentation will explore how performance can create unexpected encounters among people, places, and more-than-human worlds through two of Noguchi’s ongoing performance projects, Tire Pull and Octopus Mikoshi. He will also introduce a new performance project currently being developed in the Philippines.

Tappei Noguchi (b. 1992, Tokyo, Japan) is a performance artist whose practice explores movement, archipelagos, and collective forms of encounter. He graduated from Musashino Art University in 2015 and is currently a Japan Foundation Arts Fellow, developing an archipelagic performance practice through field research and artistic collaborations across the Philippines, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.

𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗼 𝗕. 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗼
March 17, 1945 – September 7, 2026

The Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts remembers Dr. Patricio B. Lazaro with gratitude and deep respect. His life and work contributed significantly to the development of Speech Communication at the University of the Philippines.

Dr. Lazaro earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Speech, with a specialization in Interpretation, from Northwestern University. His doctoral dissertation, “A Survey of Approaches in Philippine Oral Literature,” reflected his scholarly interest in Philippine oral traditions and interpretation. He began his academic career in the 1970s as a faculty member of the Department of Speech and Drama of the UP College of Arts and Sciences—the department and college that later became part of what is now the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts and the College of Arts and Letters.

Dr. Lazaro made significant contributions to the fields of oral interpretation, theatre, and performance. His scholarship included publications such as “Performance Activities in the Philippines” and “Reports from Abroad—Addendum, Theatre in the Philippines,” reflecting his engagement with Philippine performance and theatre.

His service to the university extended beyond the classroom. Dr. Lazaro served as Dean of the University of the Philippines Baguio beginning in 1985 and later as Vice President for Public Affairs of the UP System in 1993. He also brought his expertise in communication to professional broadcasting, serving as an anchor for RPN 9 in the 1980s.

Yet perhaps one of his most enduring legacies lies in the relationships he built with his students. Beyond teaching, he was a mentor whose guidance extended long after graduation, inspiring students to pursue excellence and, for some, to continue their own journeys in the academe.

Dr. Lazaro leaves behind a legacy of discipline, excellence, scholarship, service, and mentorship. More than the positions he held or the titles he carried, however, we remember the lives he touched and the people he inspired.

The DSCTA is grateful to have been part of his long and meaningful journey, and we honor the lasting contributions he made to the university and to the field of Speech Communication.

Rest peacefully, Dr. Lazaro. 🕊️
