The College of Arts and Sciences successfully kicked off the first day of its multidisciplinary workshop, "FROM LITERATURE TO PUBLICATION: A Multidisciplinary Workshop on Bibliometric Analysis and Science Mapping." Made possible through the full support of CAS Dean Dr. Louida Patac and CAS Research Head Mr. Jomarie Secon, the event gathered CAS faculty and selected students on-site, while also opening its doors virtually via Zoom to DepEd participants and educators from various universities across the region.

The first day focused heavily on equipping researchers with the tools needed to navigate the modern academic environment, headlined by Engr. Marjun C. Alvarado who delivered a comprehensive, multi-part lecture series on Research Landscape and Scholarly Publishing. This extensive session transitioned from foundational concepts into an advanced continuation before shifting into a hands-on interactive workshop.

The training concluded with an intensive segment on Research Visualization and Communication by Seclon, which capped off with a practical Application Activity where both in-person and online participants immediately applied science mapping techniques to their own fields of study.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) family has united in profound pride to celebrate faculty member Jerry Cuadrado, who is embarking on a monumental academic milestone after securing a prestigious scholarship to pursue his PhD in Malaysia. His official send-off was beautifully integrated into this week’s CAS weekly prayer meeting, where the community gathered to commission and bless his transition through the powerful words of Joshua 1:1-9.

The scripture served as the perfect spiritual foundation for his departure, drawing deep parallels between Joshua's historic commission to lead and Cuadrado's new academic venture. The reflection during the service connected Joshua’s divine assignment directly to Cuadrado’s scholarship, framing his studies as a purposeful calling that requires strength and courage to cross new borders. Through the heart of this passage, the CAS family assured Cuadrado that he does not walk this path alone, sending him off with their highest esteem, overflowing pride, and continuous prayers for his journey ahead.

Six brilliant Bachelor of Science in Mathematics students have officially deployed to the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) for their critical On-the-Job Training (OJT) program. This milestone placement was made possible through the dedicated guidance of OJT Program Coordinator Dr. Louida P. Patac and the unwavering support of Vocational Placement Coordinator I, Ms. Mary Ivie Arlan, RPm.

The College of Arts and Sciences and Environmental Science students from Surigao State University (SNSU) Dinagat Extension have officially launched a collaborative fieldwork and data collection drive with the University of the Philippines (UP) Biology department on Dinagat Island.
This historic joint ecological venture, which ran its initial phase from September 1 to 8, 2026, marks the deployment of the very first field research team to pe*****te these remote targeted habitats. Representing SNSU on the frontline scientific mission are faculty members Mr. Elmer R. Causing and Ms. Jella Mae L. Lesaca, alongside Environmental Science student researchers Gea R. Adriano and Jeramie D. Gabas.
While this initial cohort has kicked off the project, the critical fieldwork, biodiversity mapping, and habitat data collection on the island will continue in full swing until September 25, 2026. This continuous monitoring effort aims to catalog the rich endemic flora and fauna of Dinagat Island to secure vital baseline conservation data.

The research team extends its deepest gratitude to the Municipality of Libjo and Municipal Mayor Hon. Lamberto T. Llamera Jr. for their vital support, hospitality, and cooperation in making this scientific endeavor possible

This groundbreaking scientific deployment is the direct result of a strategic consultation conducted last August 25, 2026, with Mr. Rio Renato P. Constantino of UP, where both institutions finalized the operational roadmap for this cross-university research partnership.

With the spirit of unity, leadership, and collaboration, CAS students, organizations, and Volunteers gathered to strengthen their connection, discuss important matters, and set the course for another meaningful academic year. From the opening program to the discussions and open forum, the assembly was filled with participation, energy, and shared commitment.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has successfully secured a fund for research to spearhead a major collaborative initiative across different colleges within Surigao State University (SNSU). Serving as the primary driver and grant recipient of the project, CAS faculty recently met with university collaborators to finalize deployment details for their flagship study, "Heavy Metals and Assessment of Flora and Fauna Near Mining Environs."

Backed by this new financial support, the multi-college SNSU research team will deploy for fieldwork from October 16 to 26, 2026, on Homonhon Island, Eastern Samar. This historic island serves as a major mineral extraction hub, making it a critical geographical zone for independent academic and ecological evaluation.
The funded delegation will conduct extensive field testing and sampling across the operational sites and peripheries of major local mining contractors, including Global Met-MIN Resources Inc., Pacific Prime Metals and Resources Inc., and Verum Terra Geosciences Inc.

During the consultative session, the joint faculty finalized logistical timelines and research roles for the 11-day deployment. The assessment aims to measure heavy metal trace elements and document baseline ecological impacts on local flora and wildlife. CAS faculty emphasized that securing this external funding allows SNSU to provide local government units, environmental defense networks, and mining operators with definitive, data-backed frameworks to strengthen environmental protection guidelines.
