There are seasons in the life of an Order when reflection becomes necessary — not because we are failing, but because we care deeply about who we are becoming.

This is one of those seasons.

I speak to you today not only in my capacity as a leader, but as a brother who loves this institution — who believes in its mission, who reveres its Rituals, and who understands that what we profess is not symbolic theater, but sacred obligation.

We must confront an important truth:

There is a difference between being nice and being kind.

Many of us were formed in environments where being “good” meant being agreeable. We were taught to avoid confrontation, to preserve harmony, to smile even when something felt unsettled within us. Those instincts are not wrong. They often come from sincerity and a desire for unity.

But unity built on silence is fragile.

When silence replaces principle, peace becomes superficial. When correction is avoided, discipline weakens. When accountability is delayed, standards erode — not suddenly, but gradually.

Being nice often means avoiding discomfort. It means choosing quiet over correction. It means tolerating actions that weaken our discipline because we fear appearing strict. It means absorbing what is wrong so no one feels uneasy.

But kindness is deeper than comfort.

Kindness asks:
What will help this brother or sister grow?
What will protect the dignity of our Order?
What will preserve integrity even if it costs temporary approval?

Kindness is willing to endure misunderstanding to safeguard long-term honor.

Our Rituals have already taught us this.

When we stood at the altar during our Initiatory Degree, with hand upon heart, we pledged to fight against the evil within ourselves and to strive to live according to the principles of the Order.

That was not ceremonial language.

It was a solemn commitment.

We did not promise to tolerate wrong.
We did not promise to excuse weakness.
We did not promise to protect comfort.

We promised to fight — beginning with ourselves.

In that same degree, we were blindfolded and placed in chains. We were told to free ourselves.

No brother or sister could remove those chains for us.

The Order gives light.
The Order provides guidance.
But we must remove the chains ourselves.

If we refuse to confront what weakens us — personally, morally, or institutionally — then we choose to remain bound.

And if leaders hesitate to shine the light because they fear being misunderstood, then they dim the very light they swore to uphold.

Leadership must therefore be kind, not merely nice.

To our Grand Lodge Officers, District Officers, and Lodge Officers:

You carry more than titles — you carry influence.

Your silence shapes culture.
Your courage shapes character.
Your consistency shapes trust.

If misconduct is overlooked to preserve immediate harmony, temporary peace may remain — but long-term integrity suffers. Standards begin to blur. Expectations weaken. Discipline fades quietly.

Our Rituals do not teach us to protect feelings at the expense of principles.

In the Degree of Friendship, we witnessed Jonathan risk position, relationship, and comfort to warn David.

That was not convenience.
That was covenant.

Friendship in our Order is not flattery. It is loyalty expressed through courage. It is standing beside a brother or sister not only in celebration, but in warning. It is caring enough to say, “You are capable of better.”

Silence in the face of necessary correction is not friendship — it is avoidance.

In the Degree of Love, we saw the Samaritan stop when others passed by.

He did not weigh inconvenience.
He did not protect his own safety first.
He acted.

Love binds wounds.
Love sacrifices.
Love takes responsibility.

But love also protects the community from what causes wounds.

Love that never corrects is not love — it is neglect.

And in the Degree of Truth, we pledge loyalty, sincerity, and defense of the Order. We are reminded that the Balance and the Sword represent justice without respect of persons.

Without respect of persons.

That means standards apply equally to every brother and sister.
That means we do not excuse wrong because someone is close to us.
That means we do not soften discipline because someone is influential.

Truth demands courage.
Truth demands consistency.

Without Truth, friendship becomes favoritism.
Without Truth, love becomes sentimentality.
Without Truth, leadership loses credibility.

We also profess Compassion and Justice.

Compassion reminds us that every brother and sister is human. We all stumble. Compassion calls us to correct with dignity, not humiliation.

Justice reminds us that membership carries responsibility. It protects fairness. It ensures that standards are upheld equally. It safeguards the integrity of the whole.

Compassion without Justice becomes weakness.
Justice without Compassion becomes cruelty.

But when Compassion and Justice walk together, accountability becomes restorative rather than destructive.

To our Officers:

Leadership is not measured by applause. It is measured by faithfulness to principle.

Sometimes firmness will be misunderstood.
Sometimes clarity will be mistaken for harshness.
Sometimes correction will cost you approval.

But popularity is temporary. Integrity is lasting.

You once placed your hand upon the Holy Book and pledged your sacred honor. Be faithful to that pledge.

To our Members:

When correction comes, do not interpret it as rejection. Receive it as refinement.

You promised to fight the evil within yourself.
You promised to serve faithfully.
You promised to uphold Friendship, Love, and Truth.

Accountability is not humiliation. It is alignment with your vow.

Remember the coffin presented in the Initiatory Degree. Remember the Hourglass in the Degree of Truth.

Our time is limited.

We do not have endless years to drift.
We do not have endless opportunities to correct decline.

What shame or honor one brother or sister carries extends to the entire Order.

We are not isolated individuals.
We are links in a chain.

If one link weakens, the entire chain feels it.

My dear Brothers and Sisters, let us not confuse comfort with unity. Let us not confuse silence with peace. Let us not confuse approval with leadership.

True unity is built on shared commitment to principles.
True peace is built on integrity.
True leadership is built on moral courage.

Let our Friendship be brave enough to warn.
Let our Love be strong enough to discipline.
Let our Truth be clear enough to guide.
Let our Compassion be sincere.
Let our Justice be fair and unwavering.

We swore these things.

Now let us live them — not timidly, not selectively, but wholeheartedly.
For the honor of the Order.

January 17, 2026 marks a defining chapter in our shared journey—the formal Institution of Pasay City Odd Fellows Lodge No. 42 and the First Public Installation of its Officers. What began as a vision is now firmly established, strengthened by brotherhood, guided by our timeless principles and united by our shared commitment to serve.

With deep gratitude, we honor the presence and guidance of Grand Lodge of the Philippines, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Metro Manila South District IOOF, whose leadership and support gave greater meaning to this historic occasion.

More than a ceremony, this day was brotherhood lived—diverse in background, united in purpose, and bound by fellowship.
