Enkanto sa Mahiwagang Gubat
Oil on Canvas
36x24 inches
2024

Bayluhanay (Ilonggo word for exchange, Tagalog for palitan), is an initiative by Eskinita to gather cooperation and collaboration with artists from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

It began in 2018 as a pop-up series of exhibits at the Molo Mansion in Iloilo. This year, Eskinita revived the program in collaboration with Puluy-an Art Gallery.

This coming October, Eskinita is bringing the project to Museo de Oro, Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao. This archipelagic format of representing artists from different regions will be the beginning of a new edition of Bayluhanay to be launched next year.

Lawrence Cervantes takes deep inspiration from the daily sceneries that surround his hometown Hagonoy. Sitting on the northern shores of Manila Bay, his town has become a natural catch basin, making it vulnerable to intense flooding during high tides in the rainy season. Due to this, one would normally see ducks and herons swimming in the downpour of floodwater from the elevated neighbouring towns. It's a surreal sight that almost looks like a figment of a waking dream, but for Cervantes, this is nothing out of the ordinary and is just another typical day in the place he grew up in. Perhaps this is what inspires the dreamy atmosphere that he exudes in his body of work, as he recreates the perceived stillness and absurdity of dreams by blending his visualized phantasms with objects and characters that exist in the waking world. His paintings transport his viewers into a hidden realm, where images are painted in the atmospheric aesthetics of a freshly remembered dream. This is a world terraformed with depictions of the unearthly, where strange creatures inhibit a serene, uncharted landscape. From this entrancing backdrop, ideas that echo impressions of traditional folklore come into being.

Cervantes uses the process of creative intuition when constructing his images. From there, he continues to shape his narrative as he manifests the characters and elements that populate his work. Though his attempts to contrive visual narratives are usually unplanned, concepts around them develop as images begin to take shape. Existential and sociopolitical concepts may develop and materialize, but the artist does not delve into them and just leaves his audience to dissertate the conceptual essence of his work.

UPCOMING 🗓

Contemporary visual artists are acutely aware of the crucial time that we inhabit. They have continuously sought to capture that ambiguous, non-linear space between beginnings and endings. Tying his spiritual knowledge to the knowledge of the world, Lawrence Cervantes returns to Galerie Stephanie with his solo exhibition titled Rejuvenation. In this series, the Bulacan-based artist depicts the cycle of destruction to restoration--a continuation from his evolving narratives present in his past solo exhibitions “Origins”, “Take Over”, and “Reset”.

Breathing vigor and life on previously somber canvases, the twenty artworks humbly presented in Rejuvenation depict Cervantes' subjects’ rituals and reflective reverence--a visual breather amidst a world beyond our limited factual understanding.

“Rejuvenation” opens this coming Saturday, November 13, 2021 and will be on view at the gallery from November 13 - November 28, 2021. Galerie Stephanie is located at Shangri-la Plaza East Wing, Mandaluyong City, open from 10 am to 6 pm daily.
