The 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐮𝐨-𝐈𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐰𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐤𝐲𝐨 is inviting students to apply for 𝐆𝐂𝐈 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 (𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭), a free, 14-week online program on data science, Python programming, and machine learning.

📢 Classes begin on September 17, 2026, with live weekly sessions and recordings available for flexibility.

📋 Open to all current students worldwide, the program offers a certificate of completion and an opportunity for top performers to join a study trip to Japan.

📅 Interested students must complete their ID registration by September 7 and submit their final applications by September 10, 2026 (7:00 UTC).

𝗨𝗣 𝗜𝗦𝗖 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 | Science gets us to outer space, but the humanities give it meaning. 🚀🎨

On July 22, the UP Intelligent Systems Center (UP ISC), with the support of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and the UP College of Fine Arts (UP CFA), held the hybrid public lecture, “Towards the development of space humanities in Southeast Asia: Culture and Extraterrestrial Multipolarity” at the Multipurpose Hall of the UP Fine Arts Gallery, with Dr. Felipe Cervera, Director of the Center for Performance Studies and Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The talk underscored the role of the humanities and arts in space studies, weaving culture and creativity in answering questions that the hard sciences can not answer alone. Dr. Cervera highlighted that this was particularly important in Southeast Asia—a region still trying to establish its seat at the table.

Last June 17–20, 2026, the University of the Philippines Intelligent Systems Center's Dr. Johnrob Y. Bantang, Deputy Director for Facilities, and Dr. Andrew M. Bañas, Chief ICT Researcher, presented their study, “A benchmark of Python implementations on matrix based algorithms,” at the 44th Samahang Pisika ng Pilipinas (SPP) Physics Conference and Annual Meeting held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The study compared the different implementations of the Python programming language—CPython, PyPy, and Mojo—using matrix-based algorithms commonly employed in physics, chemistry, and other scientific fields. By evaluating these implementations, the research identified ways to improve computational efficiency while maintaining scientific accuracy.

Ever wondered how the arts and sciences intersect? 🤔🎨🧬

Last July 9, 2026, the University of the Philippines Intelligent Systems Center (UP ISC) held the talk, “Arts, Creativity, and Futures Innovation with the University of Trento School of Innovation,” with Dr. Gianpiero Monittola, Lab Manager at the Neuroimaging Laboratory of the Center for Mind/Brain Sciences, University of Trento, and Challenge Instructor at the School of Innovation.

The talk is part of UP ISC’s continuous efforts in bridging the broader scientific community with UP constituents through initiatives such as webinars and public lectures, with the goal to find innovative solutions for real-world problems. Here, Dr. Monittola discussed the role of arts and creativity in driving innovation and futures thinking. Drawing from neuroscience and brain imaging, the talk explored how challenge-based learning and micromodule design supports interdisciplinary futures work.

This event was in partnership with the UPSCALE Innovation Hub of the UP National Engineering Center, where the lecture took place. It was joined by a diverse selection of academics associated with the UP community.

In this webinar, Dr. Solano will demonstrate how genome-based machine learning and network science provide a framework for understanding and combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in tuberculosis and its co-infections. He will detail how these approaches can integrate transposon detection to improve resistance prediction, uncover hidden patterns of resistance gene co-selection and mobility across multiple pathogens, and identify key genetic hubs that may serve as biomarkers for surveillance and early warning systems.
