The Program on Higher Education Research and Policy Reform (HERPR) of the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) will hold a forum entitled “Who Serves the Poor in Philippine Higher Education?” on Thursday, 4 October 2018, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN, at the UP CIDS Conference Hall, Lower Ground Floor, Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman, Quezon City.

The event will feature the findings of the studies conducted by HERPR Research Fellows Mr. Karol Mark Yee and Dr. Geoffrey Ducanes on access of the poor to higher education from 1999 to 2014, particularly highlighting nuances in the profile, context, and the variety of barriers faced by students coming from the poorest households in accessing college education.

Research has also shown that Mindanao has a disproportionately large share of the low-performing schools in the Nursing Licensure Exam (2010 to 2016) with 28 (44% of total low- performing schools while accounting for only 22% of total schools). Most of these schools are private (63 out of 64) and are very small, with less than 2,000 students (58 out of 64).

Based on the recently released study on the Nursing Licensure Exam Performance from 2010 to 2016, performance appears to be directly related to school size. Large schools performed better than medium and small schools, and medium schools performed better than small. In 2016, 28 percentage-points separated the passing rate of large schools and small schools and 17 percentage-points separated the passing rate of medium and small schools.
