CHaSS leads Day 2 of Faculty Development Seminar-Workshop for Newly Hired and Returning Part-Time Instructors

CICS Conference Room — The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) successfully spearheaded the second day of the CSU-Carig Faculty Development Seminar-Workshop, engaging newly hired and returning part-time faculty members from various colleges on June 18, 2026.

Committed to fostering both scholarly and interactive discussions, the college invited two expert speakers who shared relevant insights and practical strategies on effective pedagogy in contemporary higher education.

Dr. Bryan M. Nozaleda, faculty member of the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), discussed the do’s and don’ts of crafting assessments, emphasizing the importance of developing valid and reliable measures of student learning. He also addressed the emerging challenges posed by Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education, presenting frameworks and best practices for effectively assessing student outputs in the age of AI-assisted learning.

Meanwhile, CHaSS faculty member Dr. Jan Justin C. Rodriguez delivered a lecture on designing engaging and interactive learning experiences in a blended learning environment—a modality that the campus will continue to implement in the upcoming academic year. In his presentation, Dr. Rodriguez highlighted the distinctions between online and traditional classroom settings, encouraging faculty members to adapt their teaching strategies accordingly. He further underscored the significance of learner-to-learner, learner-to-content, and learner-to-teacher interactions in fostering meaningful and dynamic learning experiences within blended learning environments.

Concluding the activity, CHaSS Dean Dr. Jomel B. Manuel inspired the participants to cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning and professional excellence.

“Faculty development is not a one-time event but an ongoing journey of learning, innovation, and professional growth,” Dr. Manuel emphasized.

The seminar-workshop forms part of CSU-Carig’s continuing efforts to equip its educators with the knowledge, skills, and innovative practices necessary to deliver quality instruction and respond effectively to the evolving demands of higher education.

CHaSS Honors Students, Parents in ‘Parangal ng Tagumpay’ 2026

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) of Cagayan State University Carig Campus held its Parangal ng Tagumpay at the Red Eagle Gymnasium on May 13, 2026. More than a recognition ceremony, the event celebrated not only the accomplishments of outstanding students but also the dedication and sacrifices of the parents and guardians who supported them throughout their academic journey.

The program formally opened with a processional led by students and their parents, followed by campus officials, the college dean, department chairs, and faculty members.

CHaSS Dean Dr. Jomel B. Manuel set the tone of the ceremony in his opening remarks, emphasizing that the occasion also recognized the efforts of parents whose support made the students’ achievements possible.

“Ang okasyong ito ay inyo rin, gaya ng sa inyong mga anak. Kinikilala namin ang inyong sakripisyo, ang mga gabihing panalangin, ang mahahabang oras sa trabaho, at ang inyong tiwala sa inyong mga anak,” Dr. Manuel expressed.

Dr. Mac Giovani Lagundi later delivered an inspirational message on behalf of the CEO, Engr. Roger Rumpon underscored the influence of parents in shaping the students’ present and future.

“Tayo, we are sons and daughters, and we can never be who we are and who we will be without our parents,” Dr. Lagundi said.

The recognition rites honored students who distinguished themselves through academic excellence and active participation in various fields. Graduates who earned Latin honors and other academic awards were recognized alongside students who represented the university in co-curricular competitions, leadership initiatives, campus journalism, socio-cultural activities, sports, and community service.

The ceremony also became a tribute to the people who stood behind the graduates through the years. Video presentations featuring messages from different CHaSS programs were shown to parents and guardians, followed by a surprise token-giving activity that drew emotional reactions from the audience.

The atmosphere later shifted to a more relaxed celebration as students shared dances with their parents and teachers, making the event a meaningful expression of gratitude and connection.

Delivering the batch message was Ms. Michelle R. Aggarao, the highest-ranking Magna Cum Laude graduate from the BS Psychology program. In her speech, she reflected on the quiet struggles carried not only by students but also by the people who supported them along the way.

“They say that it takes a village to raise a child, but I think it also takes a village to send someone to school. And tonight, as we celebrate the students in this room, I hope we also celebrate the villages behind them,” Ms. Aggarao shared.

Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mrs. Rowena Ramos shared the realities many families face as they strive to provide their children with an education.

“Dahil tayo mismo ang nakakaalam kung gaano kahirap ang buhay lalo na kapag kulang ang oportunidad, kaya hangga’t kaya namin, ginagawa namin ang lahat para mabigyan kayo ng maayos na buhay,” Mrs. Ramos stated.

In her closing remarks, CHaSS Department Chair Dr. Chirbet C. Ayunon reminded the graduates that success should not be measured solely by medals or distinctions, but also by the determination required to complete their studies. She commended the graduates for enduring years of sacrifices and challenges, emphasizing that reaching graduation itself is already a milestone worth recognizing.

The ceremony concluded with graduates, parents, faculty members, and guests joining together for the closing song.

More than an awards ceremony, Parangal ng Tagumpay highlighted the shared victories behind every diploma and recognition received that evening. The event reflected stories of perseverance, sacrifice, and support that shaped the graduates’ journeys — honoring not only academic achievers, but every student who persisted and reached the finish line.

CHaSS claims Top Thesis in Social, Third in Tech at 2026 Campus Search

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) delivered a strong performance at the 2026 Campus Search for the Best Undergraduate Thesis, held on April 22, 2026, at the CPAD Theater Room, capturing first place in the Social Research category and third place in the Technological category.

Reigning supreme in the Social Research category, researchers from the Bachelor of Arts in Economics claimed First Place for their timely study, “Production Costs, Rice Price Fluctuations and Income Level among Smallholder Irrigated Rice Farmers from 2019–2024 in Solana, Cagayan.” The winning researchers are Revin Joy Furigay, Michael Soriano, Mark Angelo Reolalas, Glendale Serrano, and Reymalyn Mateo. They were guided by adviser Assoc. Prof. Jezreel Pattaguan.

Meanwhile, in the Technological category, BA Communication student Nathan Joseph Alvarez captured 3rd Place under the mentorship of Dr. Jan Justin C. Rodriguez. His winning entry, the “Development and Evaluation of a Digital Audio Recording and Archiving System for the Preservation of Ibanag Salomon,” offered a vital digital solution to safeguard an endangered intangible cultural heritage.

The twin victories underscore CHaSS’s growing strength in bridging cultural preservation and socio-economic research.

CHaSS honors excellence in Research at Best Undergraduate Thesis 2026

“The only way you can be the best at something is to be the best you can be.” This principle came to life during the recently concluded Search for the Best Undergraduate Thesis 2026 at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS).

The annual event showcased the most outstanding student research across three categories—Social, Technological, and Experimental—to identify entries that will represent the college in the university-wide search for Best Undergraduate Thesis. Participants came from various academic programs, demonstrating the diversity and depth of research within CHSS.

A distinguished panel of evaluators composed of Dr. Jan Justin C. Rodriguez, Assoc. Prof. Jezreel Patagguan and Mr. Renz Marion Gavino assessed the entries. The judging criteria went beyond research rigor, emphasizing relevance to national and regional development, as well as innovation in theoretical advancement, empirical findings, policy contribution, and community impact.
